Gulf Seafood Safety Testing

A presentation from the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department discussing the methods that seafood testers have to use to determine that seafood from the Gulf is safe for human consumption. The presentation ended with an interactive smell test of contaminated seafood.

This presentation was part of an outreach effort by the Louisiana Seafood Marketing and Promotion Board to bring chefs from all over the South together with fishermen in the Gulf, the White House Chef Cris Comerford, and FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg to learn about the realities of eating and using Gulf seafood in the wake of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon BP Oil Spill.
