When Bones Rejoice
Text: Psalm 51:1-8
When David fell into sin he became a broken man. David broke a relationship between a husband and wife when he committed adultery. Marriage is a relationship which God ordains. Bathsheba was bone of Uriah’s bone. The bone was now broken and David’s relationship with God was broken. In the text David asked that God would make him to hear joy and gladness that his bones which He had broken would rejoice. David turned to God with a broken and contrite heart which God did not condemn. In Psalm 6 David asked God to heal him because his bones were vexed. Then in Psalm 22 David cried out that all of his bones were out of joint. God will put broken people back together, and He restores those who are ready to give up. Jeremiah was tired of being mocked and told God he was finished – but that which was like a fire shut up in his bones had to come out. He was called and he couldn’t just quit. Jeremiah’s bones were connected to God and the connection could not be broken. God also brings new life to those who desire to preach His Word. Ezekiel wanted a place to preach. God told him to prophecy to dry dead bones. Ezekiel obeyed and the bones came together. Marrow was put in the joints. Skin came on the bones and the very breath of God breathed life into the dry bones. If we desire to speak His Word, God will provide those who will hear it. Even when we feel dead inside, God can make us new creations. Jesus’ heart was broken on the cross, but not one of His bones. His broken heart was for our sin. Jesus Christ can fix our broken bones and cause them to rejoice.
