This is for the "Please Transpose" EP that the Eraserheads released in 2002. I had co-directed the last music video for "Maskara," so Raimund got me to direct this as well.
During this time and having just graduated from college, I was still obsessed with Dogme 95 and wanted to experiment with filmmaking rules and restrictions as well. So I got an idea. I enlisted 5 of my favorite directors from college to collaborate with me and gave them a few rules in how to shoot this music video together.
The 6 Directors of Photography:
Marc Abaya
Chris Costello
Joseph Fabul
Quark Henares
Marie Jamora
CC Reyes
These are some of the rules I gave them. (Unfortunately, I never kept a copy of the rules, so this is from memory.)
- Everyone has a camera. Tripod is optional.
- There is NO SHOTLIST.
- I divided the room into 6 parts. The band will play the song only 5 times. Each take, we will switch places and then take shots from anywhere in your spot. And I mean, ANYWHERE (hence there are shots from the inside of an electric fan, from the inside of the kick drum, etc.)
- The Color Balance is up to you. There will be no color correction in post. (I actually like guessing which camera belongs to which DP because of the color temperature.)
- The Shutter Speed is also up to you. (The band will play a take in double time, so we can slow-mo the reggae part of the song.)
- There will be no special effects added in post. (for example, if you see a shot that is upside down, that is because the DP turned his/her camera upside down.)
- I encourage playing around with tripod positions vs. going handheld. (I liked seeing shot angles being tweaked as the take was happening, I liked seeing the tripod moving from one position to another. If you see a shot of the camera suddenly shaking, it is because I was slapping the tripod so it would quake or I would be banging the table I propped the camera on.)
- Wear black to the shoot. (Basically, if you look hard, you can see a DP or two in a lot of the shots.)
TRIVIA: After we shot everything, it was the band's idea to take over our cameras and film US DPs playing their instruments. So, if you're bored, you can play Spot The DP!
I know this just looks like a regular performance video, and half our cameras were not even 3-CCD ones, but I promise you that it was a helluva lot of fun to make.
