Moderation (2005)
Moderation (2005) takes its name from a children’s tape (distributed by Chik-Fil-A) I used as the audio source. I cut the tape into pieces, re-attached them in random order (using Scotch tape), then re-recorded the resulting audio into the computer while manipulating my tape deck to stutter and distort the sound. This process mimics analog film and sound editing.
The video clips, however, were captured on a consumer-grade digital camera using the night vision filter. The bulk of the video is comprised of a few short segments (primarily close-ups of eyes and hands) layered and filtered. These clips were edited digitally to mimic the audio source.
The final result melds both analog and digital editing, though both require very different approaches. The manipulation of tape was more manual, involving my hands in actual physical interaction with the medium, while the video editing took place solely on the screen. Thus the choice of hands and eyes as my subject matter.
