Here we see the final step in preparing the field for use: spreading dozens of tons of granulated rubber and massaging them into the turf. The turf itself has a couple layers. The bottom layer consists of a tight weave of tufts about 2cm deep, the upper layer is literally artificial grass, about 5cm deep. The granulated rubber, stored in the hopper, is dispensed and ground into the turf, giving it a realistic dirt like feel and springyness. Once this is complete, the field is ready for play. The hopper holds about a ton of material, and each time you see the machine roll off, its getting another load.
