Most of those would be cool even without any dolly movement! The dolly does add a lot however.

It's so beautiful... At times, it was like I could reach into the screen and touch the bristlecones. The music was perfect with the rolling skies and light too. When I think of all the years you dreamt of going out there and now this film captures the essence of that dream - it's fantastic. Your work is blossoming in the most wonderful way - keep going!

    Great clouds at 4:04
  • Mindrelic plus 1 year ago
That valley is pretty cool the way the wind flows through it sometimes... almost causes a vortex and clouds get trapped in the middle. I plan on spending a lot more time in that area! All this stuff was shot during the full moon, i want to go back for some newmoon dark sky action :)
  • Ricardo Silva 1 year ago
    @Tom:
Yup, the stars appearing and shining above the clouds make an awesome effect!!! :-)
One of my favorite shots too! :-)

The last two shots are supreme. Take it you're using a 6ft OpenMoco dolly? The jib ups are just great.
  • Dustin Farrell plus 1 year ago
If I had a DP dolly I would just do the jib ups for like two months straight! Wicked looking move. If I didn't know what the dolly looked like and how it worked that would be one of those "how in the hell!?!?" moves.
  • Mindrelic plus 1 year ago
yep! I actually just got my hands on a 12 foot rail, cant wait to get it out in the field to play with it. 12 foot vertical jib pulls wheeee
  • Dustin Farrell plus 1 year ago
Yeah it's kinda funny that my last video got very few 'how'd the camera move?' questions. People are getting used to seeing it now. A 12 foot vertical rise may wake em' up! For a minute or two at least.
  • GRANT WAKEFIELD plus 1 year ago
Been looking at the DP site....it's a really beautiful and well designed piece of kit. Hats off to Jay and the Open Moco guys.
  • Mindrelic plus 1 year ago
grant, It sure is. The way they designed this thing, I'm able to set it up and be rolling in 5 mins. I was able to leave it assembled most of the time, and just throw the rail on the sticks when i was ready to shoot. DP rules.

How do you take pictures of the night sky well? For me it always seems, even with a tripod, to turn out blurry. Any suggestions? Oh, and your time lapse of New York, your most recent one i believe, is beautiful man.
  • Mindrelic plus 1 year ago
chris, shooting at night its important to get your lens in manual focus mode, then find the true infinity spot on the focus ring, which almost 100% of the time is never at the point the focus ring stops moving... its always just a hair back from the end point. i have a feeling this might be why you're images are blurry.
  • Mindrelic plus 1 year ago
also depends on what kind of camera you're using of course.
  • Chris Baltz 1 year ago
Well thank you, I am gonna see what i can accomplish tonight. and i'm using a Canon 7D, so its the operator, not the machine.

  • Mindrelic plus 1 year ago
thanks man, the song is a track off a cd called "ah nee mah". You're a lucky man to live there! i plan on moving there asap to film more. 5 nights was not nearly enough :)

I do like the area I live in.... A lot of people don't understand the desert has BEAUTIFUL qualities, plus it is a unique eco system combining deserts and forests! When you come back over our way you need to go to sequoia's, the Kern River, Whittney Portals, and especially Darwin Falls. So much to see. Keep up the AMAZING work!!!

I was taken breathless by this video. The haunting and urging music. The dangerous yet spiritually demanding landscapes. The clouds, oh the clouds, they were the crowning jewels of the earth below.

Next time you go out that way you should check out the various hot springs near Mammoth. Also Panum Volcano next to Mono Lake. While you're there take one of the canoe rides on the lake. Waterproof your camera, just in case.
