‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. USB flash drives are embedded into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody in public space. Everyone is invited to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your favorite files and data. Each dead drop is installed empty except a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is open to participation. If you want to install a dead drop in your city/neighborhood follow the ‘how to’ instructions and submit the location and pictures.

"and nobody will notice because you're offline"

i like this because it helps me remember that i'm embedded in a network of people who live geographically nearby, not just a virtual network of people that share a similar set of interests.

Sweet environment hack, although were I to be a frequent user, I'd invest in a USB extension cable to allow for more comfortable access. =]

Great idea. But is there no way of safe-proofing from viruses? Some shmuck could visit each of these and plant a very vile, hidden program for all to share.

This is the same way on P2P network we use everyday ;-)
  • As long as you disable auto-run (which is disabled by default on Windows 7 and maybe Vista too) then the only thing you need to worry about is running bad executables, and if you are worried about accidentally doing that, then I'd invest in a NOD32 license ;).

It's sort of like having unprotected sex with a random stranger, really dangerous but it could be lots of fun! Might be nice to have some kind of sticker or indicator that a dead drop is there, draw more attention to it without being to obvious.

Nice, I'm am Def installing one of these, were you using Nautilus and Gnome on your netbook?

I can't help but to expect some malicious autorun.inf files getting dropped onto these.

I can't watch this HD video even though I supposedly have 'broadband' (it takes forever to load). The internet is not ready for HD yet they're already talking about 3D internet...GREAT !! SOON 12 YEAR OLDS WILL BE 3D CHATTING WITH THEIR PALS WHILE PLAYING X-BOX AND PROBABLY NEVER EVEN SAY ONE WORD ALL AFTERNOON OTHER THAN "UH-HUH...YEAH..." AND CLOG UP THE 3D INTERNET BACK TO THE POINT TO WHERE I CAN'T WATCH THIS HD VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The real problem is the big telecom monopoly - our politicians are bought and paid for.

Interresting, the first one... I've seen exactly the same idea months ago (like june 2010), also in NYC iirc.

But isn't it nicer to use something like this?

Not to stick on there, that'd be too noticable, but it's much easier connecting your laptop that way ;)

i would invest in a "USB Extension" cable. It would make connecting to these a lot easier, your less likely to break the USB stick, or your laptops USB port, and wont look like a weirdo holding their laptop up to a wall... you'll just look like weirdo who has their laptop Plugged into a wall!

What I love is that these rich deposits of information can be right next to you, without you even knowing!

and that the 'download' speeds is as quick as how quickly you can find them :P
