Fascinating vid. Watch it in conjunction with the Influencers -- a film about folks who have the power/ability/charisma to influence and start trends.

There is a beauty in youth that is inexplicable. You live it, love it, express it when you're young -- you never think about the doing of it, it doesn't have value, you're not grasping onto it, in fact, often you're trying to outgrow it -- it just is and you're so full with the vitality of 'it' and of life that you're unstoppable and immortal, in a sense, or you sure as heck feel that way. And then eventually you move on to this other place where suddenly you understand the value of those fresh eyes, of that irrepressible, volcanic energy, that life force that feels everything intensely, wants all now. It's amazing, but by then, when you really appreciate it, you're past it, and you wonder if you will ever feel that intensity again. It's a rush, youth is. A wonder. Oliver S, above, I refuse to be dead too. But I know I will be. When you're in 'youth', I don't think you know that somehow. Not really. And it's a gift.

Thanks to the filmmakers for sharing. I'll post it on my blog black-thought.com, hope that's okay.

As a proud Gen Y'er, I applaud your efforts, although I'd like to offer a few constructive criticisms. First the positive. I'm glad to see more content being produced outside the mainstream channels. And this piece is a fine example of that broader trend. Your piece touches on some important issues regarding the societal and economic concerns of youth throughout some tumultuous years. Now the negatives. I think it's important to raise concerns about your choices in the depiction of youth. These concerns stem from something that all artists/documentarians/communicators need to pay attention to: the agreement between form and content. I believe the piece could've been a lot stronger if it had a better balance between form and content. This clash between form/content may inadvertently be sending the message that youth need to be talked down to. Why? 1) The voice chosen to provide the VO is not a youthful voice, it's the voice of the guy we hear in movie previews. 2) Although the piece references the spirit of (zeitgeist) of youth it doesn't ask any particular youth whether they feel that spirit. I know it's probably not what you were going for, but next time try to get some actual voices to corroborate your well researched insights.

    Respect,

    -RD

well done...but when you reference "more buying power than their parents" you're simply observing an uncontrolled sense of consumerism, driven by the inflated credit booms. our generation may have ridiculously more possessions than any other in the past....but we're also spending $1.15 for every $1.00 that we make. That's a recipe for collapse....which will happen.
