The video starts with the Hostler preparing the engine - polishing the brass and loading water into the boiler with the injector, the fireman doing some oil around work, and then the engineer checking the air compressors. It ends with the engine backing onto the turntable, and then starting its backup move to the ash pit.

The East Broad Top is a narrow gauge (3 foot) steam line that has excursions weekends from June through October. They are located roughly half way between Altoona and Harrisburg in Rock Hill Furnace, PA.

This is a natural light shoot, done with a Sony PMW EX1, edited with Sony Vegas 8.

That was a "condensation" of about 40 minutes of footage. (Lots of polishing, oiling, hammering on the air compressors...and so on..) - I hope to post a few aerial shots next week, as well as some restoration work. IF I can find someone to actually TALK about the restoration effort...

Stunning! I've only been fortunate to visit the EBT twice: Once in the 80s as a child and in 2006 for the Fall Spectacular. #15 looks AMAZING in HD. Thank you thank you thank you for this wonderful video!

The Railroad replaced more than 1000 ties this year. One of our members created a company to do the work, and installed a bunch of them. Charlie was on M-1 when it went out, so that he could find the areas that need to be addressed next. The ride was a lot smoother this year.. and hopefully will be better next year.

Thanks for the comment! With a little luck, a new owner will be found for the line. Mr K wants to sell it, since he's getting on in years, and the family business isn't in running railroads: it is scrapping them.

I'm just glad that Nick bought the line and all the coal lands that he didn't scrap everything. He could have, but he fell in love with the place.

Very nice! The Sony PMW EX1 video looks impressive. 3CCDs are better when color and detail are important.

My photography camera uses a pure RGB sensor (Sigma's SD14) and the image quality is amazing.

The Foveon is an interesting sensor, but I got turned off by the "goes to black and white" when any one of the colors got clipped. So I went canon for my still work, and the 5d and 5dmk2 are spectacular in that work.

The Canon also does an amazing job with video.. but is MUCH harder to handle while shooting than the ex is.. (Being designed for video, the EX has more controls than the sony does.. I really don't like the "everything in automatic" aspects of the Canon... If you are shooting inside a cathedral, and pan up the wall, a sure sign of automatic: the iris stopping down or opening up as you pan... To me that is VERY distracting...

The EX1 doesn't do QUITE as well as the Canon in low light, however... The problem: the prism that does the beam splitting lowers the sensativity by a couple of stops from the native sensor ability.. You chop up the beam 3 ways, and the end result is 1/3 the light hitting the sensor. So lots of light is your friend.
