This is a video of the fluid dress I made. It's 600 ft. of knitted tubing powered by a pump located in the backpack.

How do u do that if that drees was real that would cost a fourtune

    I LOVE THE VIDEO
  • Benjamin Lupton plus 10 months ago
@Lawrence like there are people who can't pay a fortune, there are people who can. Find those people.

How do you pump the different colors through? Its awesome!
  • Charlie Bucket 1 year ago
    Hi Adrian, thanks!

It's just dyed water and air. The patterns are partially controlled by the onboard valves, and partially random.
  • Adrian Cole plus 1 year ago
    Cool beans.

Have you considered using luminous fluid from glow sticks? It would only last a night, but what a night it would be.
  • Charlie Bucket 1 year ago
That would be great, but I found the fumes from the glow sticks to be too much.

Bioluminescent fluid might be an option too.

    Yes yes, of course!

  • Kyle McDonald plus 1 year ago
i love 1:10 where it alternates between the very slow dots and the quick motion. there is so much more expressiveness that goes along with having multiple tubes to control in parallel.
  • Charlie Bucket 1 year ago
Thank you Kyle, I love that part too.

Also, I *really* enjoy your OF work. I really want to get into that more.
  • Kyle McDonald plus 1 year ago
thanks charlie :) there's going to be a new OF release very soon, you should definitely download it and try it out. let me know if you have any questions, or hop on the forum :)
  • Charlie Bucket 1 year ago
Oh, I just remembered that the batteries to the main valve were dead for the shot at 1:10.

So the fluid isn't really able to propel forward – like trapping liquid in a straw by holding your finger over the top.

I should probably do this effect on purpose in the future...
  • Pedro Petracco 1 year ago
    Right on, Kyle!
    Exactly what I thought.

Why not on a real model?
  • Charlie Bucket 1 year ago
It has happened before, but I'm pretty sure the models' union would sue me over the filming conditions.
Why?? )) And how much does it weigh? (without pumping system)
  • Charlie Bucket 1 year ago
Ohh, I'm exaggerating (I'm sure we would've settled out of court.)

The dress weighs about 5 lbs dry, 8 lbs wet. I'm told it's relatively comfortable. The current backpack is pretty brutal, although most of the functionality could be translated to a light, purse-sized pneumatic power unit.
  •
  • Very cool. How did you film this? It looks like longer exposures sometimes. Time lapse?
  • Charlie Bucket 1 year ago
    Hi Alexander,
Thanks! It's all displayed in real-time without any post-processing, except for the intro and outro sequences which are mostly sped up.

I would have liked more hand-held shots (to avoid the time-lapsey look) but I was operating a dress/light control with every appendage during filming.
  • Stephen Niebauer staff 1 year ago
super impressive filming! and of the dress of course.

    amazing!
  •
  • John Rowley 1 year ago
Interesting but why didn't you film someone wearing it?
  • Charlie Bucket 1 year ago
Besides practical reasons, I think I prefer having it on the dress form for this video.

If no one is wearing it, then anyone can wear it...you know?
  • John Rowley 1 year ago
I'd thought mostly how you could hide the pump mechanism so not worried about the practicalities but I see what you mean about someone wearing it imparting something that takes away from our imagination of how it would look. Makes a lot of sense. Thanks Charlie.

    Hello Charlie,
I think this is a fantastic creation.
It is an item of beauty and that could be very useful and profitable for you.
I can see (4) Four very useful things for it, two quite easy the other two would take a lot of thought but not insurmountable. The first two would be the easier due to power availability the last two would be the harder ones.
    1) For use in Hospitals and ambulances as an emergency body heater in the wintertime.
    2) For use in Hospitals Ambulances Doctors offices and most public areas where they have automatic defibrillators to bring down body temperature fast on persons suffering heat Stroke.
    3) Use as a personal summer cooling unit, run the fluid through a small ice chest/container with DRY ICE in it. For maximum efficiency and lightness. Could be done with ice but would be much heavier for same duration and overall effect. You would have to use antifreeze and SPLIT the flow to keep it from getting too cold but in HOT climates would love it.
    4) If you could find a way to HEAT the fluid you could make a personal heating unit for use in COLD climates and persons that live in Cold would love it.
I would love it both ways as in my part of Arizona it goes from 110°F summer to -15°F winter.

The link to your creation was sent to me by a rather well known bridal designer who admired your creation. We collaborated on a show gown that was illuminated by fiber optics powered by a tiny LED pack that worked rather well That was nothing compared to your fine creation that I hereby dub"Tecknitcolor". Kudos for a stellar idea and execution.

Next gen is one that responds to ambient music beat....or the heartbeat of the wearer ??

It opens the mind. Putting Active into activewear.
Gets my mind spinning about many other things that can be done to create animated clothing. Very cool.
Art is more than something that is just nice to look at; it captures the imagination and opens the mind to other possibilities.
    You have created art!

I liked it too and I think the back-pack is cool because it's good for people to see how things work, and I don't think having knowledge detracts from the experience. People wear backpacks all the time, so why not high fashionistas?
