This piece is from some local shots I made a while ago combined with footage taken at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. I used a Canon XH-A1, edited with Sony Vegas 8 Pro, and most of the footage was shot using a Bogen 681B monopod.

I liked it. You avoided making it look too pompous by inserting a little humor in the titles. The opening shots worked really well with the music because the machinery felt really huge. The effect didn't work so well with the long shots because your subject matter became too "ordinary"....do you know what I mean?

Also, when using letterboxing, be sure the bars are on the top layer of your effects. That way, they won't suddenly disappear when you do a white burn out

    Nice job.

Thanks. I just used the standard XH-A1 lens and manipulated aperture and camera position.

Thanks Mario. Hans Zimmer knows how to put the notes together, doesn't he?

what tape do u use? I've hard bad luck with drop outs when recording in HDV.
do u import HDV direct to vegas or use an intermediate ( I think its Cineform) codec?

I mostly use Sony DVM60PRR (DVC Premium) tapes, which cost about $2.50 each. These work great and I've never experienced a drop-out. I keep an unlabeled tape in my cameras, use them once, and then file them away.

Supposedly the Excellence or DVM63HD tapes, which cost about $12 each, are supposed to be more durable and withstand repeated use better. I use several of the DVM63HD tapes running tests where I reuse the tape, & sometimes for paying work because I have a stock of them already. So far I've never noticed a difference between the performance of the two tapes. I will likely discontinue buying the more expensive tapes once they are used up.

I import my files directly into Vegas, edit the .m2t files, and export usually into .wmv in 30P into Vimeo. I do not use any intermediate codecs since my machine can handle .m2t in the timeline.

thx for the input. I was reading the thread on the DVI network which led me to ur work. I've had pretty miserable luck with drop outs when recording HDV, even with good quality tape. In addition, i use FC Pro most of the time for editing (which is not particularly friendly to HDV) although I have a copy of Vegas 8 which I'm playing with on the Windows side of my Mac.

Ur work is very appealing. It's nice to see that good quality can be had with these cameras and format.
    regards

I'm surprised FCPro has problems with HDV. I've seen a few threads about .m2t files not behaving correctly.

That was really good and everything about it was really clean. I recently got Sony Vegas and I've had alot of problems trying to figure out the rendering settings to upload on here. I've tried to look it up on google no luck and I've tried looking for a video either on here or youtube for rendering settings. If you wouldn't mind could you give me the rendering settings your using b/c it seems that I have hit a Brick wall when it comes to getting these settings. Also the property settings I don't know if I'm Just not looking hard enough but you would really save me alot of time if I could get the rendering and property settings that you use for vimeo

    Thanks in Advance,

    BDC,

I shot this one in 1080-60i but rendered it to 720-24P. I often use 720-30P as well.

    1. Highlight the portion of the project in the timeline you want to render,

    2. Click "File" then "Render As" from the top menu

    3. In the dialogue box that appears, find the "Save as Type" field and select "Windows Media Video V9". In the "Template" field select "4.8Mbps HD 720-24P Video" or "6.0Mbps HD 720-30P Video".

    4. Select where you want to save the file and name it, then press the "SAVE" button. It will then render to the file. Load this file into Vimeo and you are done.

Hi Roger. How'd you do the letterbox effect?

Just placed black bars on video tracks above (parent) to ones containing actual video material. In Vegas you can also just change the height and width, but it can have unusual edge effects. Placing black bars just masks out the extremes and defines a clean limit.

Once you place the bars, you can then digitally move the content up and down slightly (areas otherwise hidden behind bars) to create gentle motion simulating tripod movement. Some of the movement in this piece is actual panning and tilting during capture, others are introduced during post.
