1. "Clap Your Brains Off" Mexican Droste Videoclip
1 year ago
This video uses a mathematical formula based upon an image Escher did (The Print Gallery), known in these days as the "Droste Effect".
This is my first videoclip as a Director, and it was made entirely using a Digital Reflex Camera, Canon's Mark III which captures up to 115 continuous pictures, at 10 fps.
As this was really low budget video, it was made possible thanks to the help of lots and lots of friends.
This video was "inspired" by the amazing pictures of Sebastian Perez Duarte (I mean that as an euphemism). I just wanted to add movement to those kind of images.
All of the image process was made in my home computer, thank's to Pisco Bandito/Josh Sommers' tutorials, and Bill Hornes code. A friend of mine, Chema "The Mecatronic", helped me automate all of the process.
This is the result of almost 6 months of work.
Soon I'll post the making off, hope you enjoy it.
This is the video of a band called "No Somos Machos Pero Somos Muchos" (NSM PSM) and they're about to release their first album. This is their first single "Clap your brains off"

Is the code that you used publicly available? I'd love to compare Bill's Droste Formula to my own to see how he achieved it compared to mine.
  • Frank Beltrán 1 year ago
Yes, it's actually under the GNU Public License...
You'd just have to ask him. He's a member of the Escher's Droste Print Gallery forum, That's where I contacted him.

Reminds me of a modern Busby Berkeley film. Very edgy and really cool to watch.

    Excelente!!!
Deberían tratar de grabarlo en HD, o al menos, en una resolución mayor que la actual.
  • Frank Beltrán 1 year ago
de hecho está en una resolución mucho mayor, porque cada foto es de 3888 pixeles, nada más que este transfer para internet no está en alta... Y me falta investigar un poco de compresiones y esas cosas... Pero bueno, gracias por los comentarios

  •
  • Hey, Frank I really loved your video...I watched the making and in it you said you used java...what did you use it for? was it to automate the droste effect?
  • Frank Beltrán 1 year ago
Actually, the code that I recieved from Bill was programmed in java, we (well the mecatronic) just automated the whole process... Usually, droste effect is done in mathmap through gimp, with that java code, you dont need nothing but java... You just take some parameters and information from photoshop or gimp just as the image center, the inner radius lenght and the outer radius lenght. With that information, you process it all in java later on.
  • Cool, I'm gonna be making a music video for a band soon and I wanted a small part of it to be droste.I'm going to be shooting in hdv and the droste part might be 30 seconds long...24framesx30seconds=a crazy amount of work if I were to do it the gimp way...
.do you plan on making a tutorial or something based around the java code because the would really save me a lot of time.
