Just got my D90 and took a walk around the block.

20min walk,3min upload and 15min edit.

There is no CC.Straight from D90.

No tripod,excuse my shaky hands.

That's nice! What lenses were you using here?
  •
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
    28mm at f2.0

A 28mm lens on a DX camera gives the same angle of view as a 45mm lens gives on a 35mm film camera.
  • david andree 3 years ago
...28mm @ f2.0? are you using the infamous nikon 28mm 1.4? or is this a sigma? or not a prime at all? just curious... thanks
  •
  • Jimmy Swift 3 years ago
Can you confirm that you can lock the exposure? And can you change frame rates, or is it only 24fps? It would be sweet if you could do 1fps timelapse shots!
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
    Confirm.
    • AE/AF lock ¹
    • AE lock only
    • AF lock only
    • AE lock (hold)
    • AF-ON
    • FV Lock

24fps only, although dpreview says that has built in intervalometer(find it if you can)...do believe you can use external though.

this is the best d90 clip yet , i wish someone would up load a clip of the d90 with zeiss prime lenses
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
:))))...Imagine that(big cooke on your d90)
  •
  • Jimmy Swift 3 years ago
If you can lock it, then why the hell are all the test i have seen jump from bright to dark during the shot? I wonder if it is the iso adjusting. I guess we will no more when people put it to the test.
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
because they used the auto feature
  • Judson Collier 3 years ago
you have to hunt to get the AE-L feature to actually lock. by default, it only works when pressed, which realistically is difficult when your manning the focus ring at the same time.
  • dark800 3 years ago
hello, i locked it once automatically it was locked all the time without i press it i really dont know how i did that

What is that music you are using for the clip?
  •
  • Peter Gabriel 3 years ago
When I download the quicktime file it says the Sorenson 3 codec???
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
it`s a QT codec for better compression, usualy comes with NLE`s(Avid,Vegas,Premiere,Final Cut)
  •
  • mini me 3 years ago
    nice use of picture controls.
it's best to apply color changes there instead of altering the final movie (compressed and 8 bit)

Jimmy Swift: many users didn't press the ae-l button while recording

Nicely done. I have an HV20 / Letus Mini combo, but this makes me consider the D90. Unlike some other D90 footage, I didn't see a lot of skew / rolling shutter issues in your video.
  • mini me 3 years ago
i know, i think the same
the picture controls are a hidden gem many didn't notice on d90. it's like a dream to tweak colors on raw, anyway you like, without the banding or clipping you'd get from editing video after it was taken.
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
    :)
  •
  • Peter Gabriel 3 years ago
Where are they hidden? And what other controls did this video use besides the AE and AF lock?
  • mini me 3 years ago
    look for "picture control" adjustments.
you can either use presets, edit presets with the cameras's menus or make them on your pc/mac.

    Good stuff. Thanks!
How much memory did that use? Very curious.
    Also, what song? Love it!
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
almost 1Gb was used(sequences were twice longer).
  • LudaChris 3 years ago
    Thanks.
So what do ya estimate a 5min clip would run in size?
Just wondering what sized card I need.
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
1gb I think will cover just fine...idea is to get a fast card ...like the new SanDisk designed for D90

this is good news.I want this camera now. thanks for posting. Would like to see some 85mm lens shots if you got one, some panning shots, low light etc. But i'm geeking out here so I'll shut up.

i just hope canon petnax sony etc,, come out with there response to video slr with a 1080p dvideoslr camera . and it would be great to have a power grip with xlr inputs with gain control , i think that would be to much to ask.

I love this clip for showing me what the D90 can do. I hate this clip for making me want to spend money. Anyone got documentary footage from the D90 yet? I'm thinking it could be a great covert camera.

Made me seriously think about getting rid of my brand new canon Xsi
    Can i ask...?
when you do exposure lock, can you lock shutter and aperture? or just aperture?

Got to love that shallow depth of field. Nice work. If you get a chance I would like to see how the D90 handles fast motion.

man.... this makes me want to do the unthinkable and buy a nikon... I can't believe I just said that... I'm looking to buy a lens adapter for my HV30 to use my dads old Nikkor lenses but this... this might be something I should get instead... oh man...
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
I had HV30,it has great image for it`s price range ...but this you`ll never regret this one....Nikon should give me some incentives:))

nice for these static shots but... with the cmos, everything will look tweaked because of the rolling scan...
I guess you can minimize that with few to zero pans.
great for an all-in one camera though.

  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
    I like them too :)

It's very coherent altogether, and done in so little time. Shaky hands dont bother at all, I even thought you had a stablecam.

Great video man. I had a question for you. I have a D90 and have been into photography for a long time, and know how to use photoshop really well...but what about video software? If you don't mind, what software did you use to edit this movie? Thanks!

    Nice work man....
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
    Hi Ryan,

    Glad you like it.

    I`m using Vegas,PPro and AE

The advantage of using Premiere Pro,is that is not converting your image to .m2t.

The trick with PPro is, to not render the clip in time line(leave it Red),put your blocks together and just save the project as Premiere Pro file.

Open After Effects and just go to import projects....open the saved file. You`ll have the entire PPro time-line untouched in AE.

I like the render engine of AE,so it`s all about the taste.

After you CC your clip ad a title, you are ready to render.I render QT uncompressed,if I want to play more in Vegas. This will give you a big file.

If not, just Sorenson3 and you are good to go.

    This is just my method.
  • raf 3 years ago
I had the same exact question. I first exported with QT H.264 now I'm redoing it with Sorenson3... we'll see how it comes out. For those of you who are wondering where the heck your Sorenson codec went on a Mac, go to System Preferences/QuickTime/Advanced/check enable legacy codecs.

What kind of CC did you use?

Stellar footage by the way! The opening shot is SOOOOO crisp and deep in color! PS. I also like the "shaky hand"

The f2.0 helps a lot with noise reduction I bet. Just got a 50mm 1.8 to shoot with, and will post some videos with that when it comes.

Anyway, Thanks for all the info! Much appreciated.
  • raf 3 years ago
    stoiQa,

I'm kinda new to the digital conversion, but I am really glad I looked into your suggestions. Just finished rerendering my clip with QT Sorenson3 in AE and it is superb. So much better than before. So much so, that I reuploaded the clip! Thank you so much !!!

    Hello,

    Really nice job !

It could be nice to download original avi video. I would like to make some edit tests with Adobe Premiere Pro for quality results.

Would you like to place it on a free place like yousendit.com, please ?

Look at "D90 Japanese sample", i put the original AVI link.

    Best Regards

any ideea if the d90 choses the same settings in A mode as in movie mode?
If so.. one could use a tripod.. select Aperture priority - leave auto ISO on.. start pointing at static subjects until he gets the ISO/shutter combination that he wants.. then switch to LV - AF lock to shoot movies.
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
Movie mode has a life of it`s own....A mode is not affecting it in any way.
  •
  • James H 3 years ago
Just to understand this from a normal person and not a marketing/sales guy... The footage coming out of the D90 can be imported and edited natively in Premiere CS3 or Final Cut Pro?

    If so, I'm sold.
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
    correct...now go get one :)
  •
  • Daniel Rece 3 years ago
what I meat was if A-mode uses the same metering as movie mode... if it does one could use A-mode to guess the settings for movie mode: stick it in
A-mode - start pointing at stuff 'till u get iso 200 1/30 - then switch to movie mode. If the d90 uses the same metering system in both modes, it should chose roughly the same settings.

    Thanks for video!

I wonder, do you use the trigger to start/stop recording? or is there another button for movie recording?

and if I understood it right you have to hold the AE button so it does not compensate for the change in light?

thanks again - beautiful clip there - you did not answer the questions about the music used :-)

but my iPhone found Jerome Isma-Ae, Underwater Love
  •
  • stoiQa plus 3 years ago
    Hello Borre,

I don't think D90 has external trigger option...but this was not the case.

You don't have to keep AE pressed all the time

You can press it once, at the beginning of the recording...and record with the AE locked all the time, without the need to worry about it....of course you`ll have to remember to lock it down before shooting.

dvxuser D90 section has very insightful info.

    Thanks for comments

    I have this bookmarked :)

Nice images! I have a D90 also.. and I cannot get a decent image from it.. images are beatiful but the high compression makes the footage unusable for even SD video.. blocks are bigger that an old mpeg1 one file!

    I'm the only one????
  • N.R. 2 years ago
I have the same issue, and Nikon said it's normal. I guess you have to just learn which situations it's good at, and avoid the bad situations (film only close things, far things look crappy)
  •
  • Janis Brod 1 year ago
i have the D90 and i couldn't really find out yet: do you have to press the AE-L/AF-L button all the time? or is there a possibility to lock it, so you can concentrate more on filming?
  • Chase Schiefer 1 year ago
Go to the custom settings menu, and choose ae/al hold. This way, you press it once and it stays in hold mode till you press it again.
