I didn’t really know what to expect from the Velcro Lewis Group. Despite having seen his name around town for many years, I had never seen Velcro live, and searching around on the web lead me to different incarnations a man with various backing bands (i.e. Velcro Lewis & his 100 Proof Band). Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised that drummer Hawk Colman used a kick drum as a floor tom (and sang lead on many of the songs), utility musician Lawrence Peters finagled an electric washboard, and guitarist Phil Hunger played his Les Paul out of a stack amp for an aesthetic and sound straight out of the 70s. All this madness fit nicely on top of Harlan’s chugging basslines, and of course Velcro’s manic vocals and relentless maraca shaking.
