See all Show me
A few years ago, I wrote a little tune called 'Sad Penguin'. I recently discovered it again, and decided to remake it (in GarageBand). Then I got carried away and decided to make an animation to go with it (although I adapted the tune a bit to fit with the animation). This is it!

Orignally there was a sad ending, but after seeing it so many times (during the animating process) I got really depressed, so I changed it to have this ending. Now I think I went too far the other way, but I can't be bothered to change it again.

Technical Stuff:
I drew each frame in MSPaint (yes, each frame, there's about 1400 of them). Some of the hardest parts are probably the bits you wouldn't notice unless I pointed them out, e.g. the bubbles when he falls into the water. I was trying out an animation technique of colouring him in by scribbling, but doing it for each frame so that it constantly changes. In retrospect it was probably a bad idea, because it doesn't look particularly good and made a lot more work for me! I put it all together in Windows Movie Maker. I got the sound effects from 'Klik and Play' - the same program I used to help make this animation;

My 10 year old son was getting quite sad watching this, and he was very relieved to see it ended happily. I therefore think that the happy ending works well.

It is truly heroic of you to have made an animation of this quality in MSPaint- do yourself a favour and purchase a decent animation program! You will save yourself hours of effort.

Glad he liked it in the end.

It wasn't quite as bad as drawing 1400 frames because there is some repetition, but there is still just over 500 seperate frames I think.

Better software would definitely be a blessing, although I think I've had enough of animations for the time being. I'll probably start doing them again in a few months or something, and then I'll think about getting new software.

  • Awww. I'm glad he found someone :)
I'm so glad you changed the ending!

While I was making it, I came up with so many endings. I think this one might be a bit too happy, but it will do ;)

    A HAPPY ending??? SELLOUT!!!

I expect happy endings from my American brethren (and sisteren), but not you.

As your attorney and spiritual advisor, I suggest the following Euro-Appropriate endings:

    1. Penguin swims away and meets Kate Moss & Pete Doherty. After a weeklong binge of spiking Speedballs, Penguin is mercilessly headbutted to death by Zidane over who gets the last piece of pizza in the takeout box.

    2. Penguin swims to France. Is overcome by ennui. He writes a 20-volume opus, "A La Recherche Du Temps Penguine" then impales himself on a very stale bagette. As he bleeds to death in hospital, he realizes that socialized medicine is in fact a bad idea.

    3. He moves to Wales.
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Haha, I can tell you a couple of the original endings:

    1) Penguin falls into the sea, where he is blasted into the air by a whale's blow hole. He enjoys a few quick seconds of flying with the gull before plummeting back to earth with a splat!

    2) Penguin falls into the sea, where he realises he can 'fly' underwater. Then get's eaten by a whale.

    3) Penguin realises that with a run up he CAN fly with the gull! Only to be harpooned by the 'Lost at sea' crew from the other animation.

You guys are too funny !

I think that ending #1 would have been pretty good. That way we get to see him achieve his dream (albeit briefly), and then we get the satisfaction of watching a cute, cuddly penguin go splat. Those are the best endings. Teaches kids that even if you achieve your dreams, death is always lurking around the corner.
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Or worse, it teaches them that if you achieve your dreams - you'll die!

nice work with such tedious technology.

i love it! Did you have this story in mind when you wrote the song?
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
No, like I say, I originally wrote the tune years ago. It was about a character me and my friend had seen on TV and liked, and that was as far as it went until recently when I rediscovered the tune, and decided to make this.

    worst thumbnail ever! hahaha
    but nice clip ;)
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
It's wierd, I actually like it like that - I'm hoping it will make people curious and come and watch to find out what it's all about. Having said that, when we get the option to change the thumbnails back, I'll probably change it.
  • HannahMai plus 3 years ago
Yeah, you're maybe right about the curiousity effect. But i first thought it would be a technical error or something. But in the end it made me curious and i came and watched... ;)
  • islebehere plus 3 years ago
i don't need no stinkin' thumbnail to watch your videos, Barney. they're always great! especially the animation ones. you put so much effort into them. really outstanding!
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
    Haha, thanks.

The thumbnail is what got me to watch it.

    1400frames with MSpaint amazes me.
where do you find that kind of patience?
    this is great!
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
It took a couple of weeks on and off, forcing myself to do it because I wanted to see what it would look like finished!
  •
  • ojo plus 3 years ago
lovely music, nice clip - as the others mentioned already hard job in mspaint.
    Well don !!

  • jendreams 3 years ago
Very sad. But excellent. That took a lot of patience, so kudos to you.
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Thanks. Did you see the ending?
  • jendreams 3 years ago
Yeah, unless I missed something. I just found the ending sad too, somehow. I think it was more the music than anything, though, because I think it guides the emotions of the animation, so even if the penguin meets his true love (or however the viewer chooses to interpret it), the music still makes it seem sad.

the sad penguin on Trigger Happy TV used to make me cry. seriously.
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Your the first person to make the link - that's what the original tune was about - the sad penguin from there. This animation is inspired by that character!
  • cdfio 3 years ago
ha! yeah, and my boyfriend at the time would do an impersonation of the sad penguin--and that made me cry, too.
    sad penguins are oddly depressing.
ah! now i'm getting sad thinking about sad penguins!!!

    1,400 frames hand drawn WOW!!!
You should buy Flash 8 so you don't have to draw as much.

Have you ever seen this: heathwala.com/video/wings_video.html by any chance? I remember watching that years ago and both yours and his have a very similar resemblance. Both good though.
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
No I haven't. I guess there's not a lot of stories you can do with penguins - hence the resemblance. I love the dialogue in that cartoon. Thanks for the link.
  • pstine 3 years ago
    No problem.

WOW! I loved it!!!!! I can't believe the way you made it, sounds insanely rough!

The song was great, it definitely emoted what I was seeing. I always find it, an interesting process to create a song, then make visuals for it, always awesome. I usually work in the opossite direction, but it has been fun when I didn't. I can see how it would have ended up depressing too. But I liked the ending!

Don't worry little penquin, you can't fly, but you can swim and do some kick ass ice slides!!!

    BRAVO!!!!!!!!!
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
    Thanks :)

I wanted to prove that you can make animations with software that comes free with your computer. I think I proved that you can - but it's bloody hard work!!!!

I'm glad I did it now though. It's great to have something to go with the music after all these years!

  • trp0 3 years ago
You are friggin' crazy to have done this in Paint. I'm surprised you aren't bleeding or something.

I applaud your patience. It turned out quite nicely (the animation, not your patience...although I guess that kinda turned out nicely too).
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
By the end of it I was going quite mad. Once it was finished though, it was such a relief. I've almost forgotten the endless days I spent huddled over a hot computer screen, moving things a few pixels at a time, wondering if it will ever end, seeing the same damn penguin over and over and over and AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!

*phones mental hospital to request a padded cell*
  • trp0 3 years ago
heh. That was snow falling right? As the penguin is standing there? As I was watching it and thinking about doing that in Paint, I felt a twinge of pain. :)
  • Buck Flashroy 3 years ago
Nope - no snow. That was just an animation technique I was trying out, where there isn't much action, but it's made to look busy by making the colouring move. There used to be some English kid's cartoons that did the same thing ("Spider in the bath" and "Rubarb and Custard"), and I wanted to try it out. In retrospect it was a bad choice because it's normally used for making things look fuzzy, whereas penguins are normally smooth. Oh well.

The moving things a couple of pixels at a time, was for things like when he was running.
