Would be great to send things like this to Shapeways. Instant sculptures.
  • flight404 plus 1 year ago
That would be sweet! At this point, it would have to be a relief sculpture because there is no backside to the geometry. It is essentially a warped plane.

Scan everything like this robot: youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=dRPEns8MS2o
Might be possible to create a full body mesh this way.

This is incredible. I am a total luddite w/r/t to this sort of technology, though: am I correct in thinking that all the image data is coming from the Kinect sensor? In that case, how on earth does it recognize the whites of your eyes, and that your skin is different from your hair? This is CRAZY!
  • flight404 plus 1 year ago
Thanks presta. All of the image data, depth map included, is coming from the Kinect. Since the Kinect can give me a distance to each 'pixel', I can use these distances to generate a normal map. This is how it seems like the Kinect is paying attention to my skin vs. hair vs. eyes. It isn't actually. Its just that my eyes are further away from the Kinect than my forehead and cheek so the Kinect views my eyes as a recess. Does that make sense? I plan to write a blog post about the process sometime this week. That will definitely explain it better.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm still befuddled by the specific thing I'm talking about the photo-like quality when the focus is finely resolved – your pupils are distinct from the whites of your eyes, your hair and t-shirt are darker thank your skin – but I'm content to write it off to magic and the prowess of your coding for the time being, and wait on the blog post. Hope you're having fun!

    Robert-

not sure if you saw okreylos' work with the Kinect yet-

You two might want to talk, he is working on stitching Kinects together for full room topography.

Better use of the kinect than Dance Central anyway..

I think there are issues with ATI video cards? Of the people that responded to my informal poll on Twitter, the only people that had problems getting it to work had ATI cards. Not sure what is going on there.... :(
