Build is a small, yet perfectly formed, boutique design conference where interesting, talented web practitioners from all over the world come to share ideas, techniques and inspiration. Some are on stage; some are in the audience -- buildconference.com

To really think about design, you need to learn and think about everything other than it. Design is a vessel: the most important part is what it holds. As makers of things, the work gets better from outside influences, and gives us clarity about the purpose of the work: to inform, to persuade, and to delight. We'll spend some time ruminating on what it means to delight our audiences, think of different ways to do so through mechanisms like storytelling, and realize that the real benefit of making anything is to nourish lives.

Frank Chimero is a graphic designer, illustrator, teacher, maker and writer hailing from Portland, Oregon. He also teaches graphic design & typography to eager minds at Portland State University and is managing partner of graphic design blog, Thinking for a Living.

Thank you for this talk. It resonates with and answers many of the questions that I have been dealing with in design over the past couple of years. Delightful.

Brimming with wisdom. Amazing that the clearest, most resonant definition of design to date is well over two thousand years old.

Nice talk. The part of the speech about logic reminds me of fuzzy logics wich is a field within mathematics that deals with a kind of "fuzzy" reasoning :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuzzy_logic

Thanks for the kind comments, everyone.

Dan: To clarity-it's not a burn (or at least not intended to be). I was merely making the point that the more often a strategy gets imitated, the less successful it becomes. This doesn't negate the successfulness of that approach initially, however.

So did I. I wish I could back you more.

And I think you really hit the spot here, Frank.

You made me realize what I've been doing wrong lately. Thanks. It's been more than delightful to me - it has helped me be more delightful to others.

One of the Great Biblical Commandments is.."Thou Shall Not Covet"...Coveting can turn into a real driving force of negativity.....Look at it like this...there are free websites with over 10,000 free templates to build your own website......How many for Ice Sculptures exist?

I'm only up to 12:30 so far, but I have to say i see my "design thinking" as research, i research what the user wants what the client wants (at every level, not just your contact) and what works for and against the competition. I am an in housr designer, so I only have one client, and it is an ongoing relationship, but I think freelance needs the same kind of relationship to keep a client coming back. there's no magic, not hocus pocus, just a lot of surveys, watching people, asking questions etc.

Attention is indeed the most scarce resource. Thank you for holding mine hostage for 40 minutes. It was a great talk.
