In this short film for LG, directed by Chris Hewitt from Knucklehead, two strangers lives align on one very remarkable day. Set against the back drop of inner city London, Orion House tells the story of loss from two perspectives. The sun, circles and cycles all play their role in an event that will finally bring two people together and in turn show that life is good.

So moved by this!! The use of 2:40 ratio set the artistic weight of the cinematography through the roof. The end with the bird and the two characters on opposite sides of the window was such a special moment. I can't help but ask if you really filmed an eclipse or was it a little post magic? Great job Chris.
  • Sami Takieddin 10 months ago
I'm thinking its post magic. Otherwise the actors would have gone blind :)

i have to be honest, really nice filming etc, everything amazing , except one thing
why don't you just film 16:9 as everyone does, this 100:1 gets annoying after just 5 seconds
  • Mike Greenwood 1 year ago
    Agreed
  • Mmm, whilst I must admit, I'm really not much of a fan of this sort of ratio (or specifically, this ratio, itself, either) I do at least admire the filmmaker in trying to do something a little different and left field in comparison to other films and film makers.

I enjoyed this piece because I found it strangely relaxing :).

    Truly stellar.

How much of the lighting effects were done in post? For example the horizontal light streaks on some of the outdoor shots, or is that just a product of the anamorphic lens?

The extremely cropped aspect ratio was a bit distancing in close-ups, and really only felt relevant for master shots; and that artificial lens flare kinda negates the soft natural lighting. However, great stuff.

I loved the story, but sadly I'm another one who finds the ratio used disturbing. It gives me a feeling of claustrophobia. Maybe that's part of what you were going for, and if so, you succeeded beyond your wildest dreams. Still, I found it hard to concentrate on the story and the action whilst feeling a bit 'queezy' in the tummy.
Still, overall well done. Very evocative.

  • carolina_dee 1 year ago
Just another thought. If you WERE using that narrow aspect to illustrate how closed in our world can be when we are engrossed in ourselves, our own little 'rituals', etc. then maybe if you had shot the final scene in a normal aspect it would have shown how much larger our world can be when we open ourselves up to things beyond our selves. As I said, just a thought.
