Kinect + Computer Vision + Javascript

DepthJS is a web browser extension that allows any web page to interact with the Microsoft Kinect via Javascript.

Find out more at depthjs.media.mit.edu

Navigating the web is only one application of the framework we built - that is, we envision all sorts of applications that run in the browser, from games to specific utilities for specific sites. The great part is that now web developers who specialize in Javascript can work with the Kinect without having to learn any special languages or code. We believe this will allow a new set of interactions beyond what we first developed.

DepthJS is open source under the AGPL license. github.com/doug/depthjs

Awesome! I have more fun playing with Kinect navigation than the actual games. Can we get a link to play?
  • Greg Elliott 1 year ago
thanks derek! we're going to package all this up nicely with instructions on how to install and get it up and running. you can check out the source now and play around, but might e worth waiting till we make it painless.

Great stuff, all I can think about is how cool this would be if it was rigged up to work on an HD projector. Keep posting videos of your progress, the internet will thank you!

Not precise. Tiresome. Lagging. Makes you look and act like a retard. The negatives are so many for serious use than besides some use cases here and there this is far far from the future. Thank God or something. Keyboard, mouse, joypads, multitouch thank you very much ANY day over this crap technology and similar ones.

Minority Report? Wake me up when we have something like Iron Man 2 and at least that!!!

Not to take the job of a moderator but come on, let's keep it constuctive. This is Vimeo not YouTube.

Iterative steps such as this should be encouraged, particularly when they are open source. I appreciate that this isn't for everyone but this initial step could potentially lead to a revolution in HCI.
  • AppleSeed Greece 1 year ago
You are correct. I should explain that whatever I said here is mostly about the Kinect hardware.

Software wise what they accomplished is stunning :D

This is an excellent first step guys.

I wonder if you can take it to the level of being able to discard of the keyboard and mouse altogether. It would be great if you could select text, open context menus, type etc.

Programmable gestures would also be a welcome addition.
  • Aaron Zinman 1 year ago
    Thanks James!

We think there are multiple ways to use the web. The Kinect offers some nice possibilities for casual browsing. Perhaps we will find a nice way to enter text, etc, but we are not there yet.

Interesting, but I really don't care about waving my arms to interact with the same old Windows interface. But I'd love it if somebody came out with a low cost, Kinect-based, motion capture application, so that I can record rough mocap data with Kinect and load it into Maya seamlessly to refine it.
    What about that?

    Well done.
I guess we all knew what's next when kinect was released. It's a great tool. Surely for education / public / advertising usage... But honestly, even though it looks cool, I think it won't be very comfortable for long-time usage.

Just stumbled upon this and I think it's incredible. I was working with a gesture interface for music collections for my thesis, but I'm not too familiar with code. Would it be possible to have this work with dual monitors/dragging and dropping folders/playing back music within collections?

    Let me know, thanks! anthony@experiencist.com

Nice. Would be even better when WebGL will be turned on by default in stable releases of browsers. Kinect games in browser == yay.

But yeah, games. That's not usable for long-time web surfing. Multi-touch gestures and keyboard shortcuts (together) are still better.
