PROMISE is a projection sculpture designed by Cindi Drennan, and in its various configurations it allows many ideas about promises to be represented. This installation in October 2009 was programmed during the Port Festival South Australia. The structure is composed of recycled fabrics including wedding dresses, old lace, torn curtains into a huge 6m structure with sails like ships. This installation used one only, of a pair identical structures, to symbolise the loss and grief of one partner losing another. In this case the Widows Walk represents a local heritage of Port Adelaide and many historic sailing ports, where the woman waited alone, possibly with children or unfulfilled dreams of children, for a partner who had promised to return. The voyager does not come back for unknown reasons, possibly he has betrayed their love or has drowned at sea. PROMISE widows walk expresses the loss and confusion of broken or failed promises through Projection Art and soundscape.
