I like my Zoom H2 and I like it even more with 4 line inputs.
This 3 minutes instruction video shows the way you can make yourself a 4 track fieldrecorder. I don't say its easy....but it can be done in an evening. Now I can record 4 channels from my computer audio interface when the softsynth is running. The quality is great. Good luck!
