98. "Skyfishing" with a GoPro HERO and 30 Helium Balloons
1 year ago
tomguilmette.com

Looking for a cheap way to shoot aerials? I may have found a solution. Get 30 balloons, a fishing pole, some helium, a bit of Styrofoam and a GoPro HD camera. I call it "Skyfishing".

I was amazed at how smooth the shots came out. Let me know what you think. Get out there and try this!

Be careful in windy conditions and I assume no responsibility if your camera ends up getting away...

That is definitely clever. I would love to see the look on a producer's face when I busted out a helium tank.

"So, let's run down the checklist.
    Helium? Check.
    Weather Balloons? Check.
    RED EPIC 3D Array? Check.
    Wait... WHAT? ARE YOU INSANE?!"

I got to buy a Gopro ... I had this idea too, I did it with my 7D and I needed 835 helium balloons. Way too expensive !

Super idea Tom, I was first going to do this with one of these square big steady kites and my NokiaN8 but this idea i like more specially the fishing line is so good as you don't see it! BTW Have you seen the father and son getting this done with a weather balloon to the atmosphere and GPS built in?!

Great video as always Tom. I've done this sort of thing before (not with cameras but with Tinfoil to create UFOs near army bases.....) and I think the issue you are facing is with that many balloons, the latex starts weighing a ton. Go with those HUGE balloons in the toy section with the rubberbands for bouncing against your fist. They hold a lot more Helium per latex weight and I bet it would make this a lot easier. Keep up the good work, we love posting your stuff on Fstoppers!

Neat idea. If i were gonna try it, i'd spend a little more time on the camera suspension to make sure it's level when floating.

That's a great idea! Just a thought, you should figure out a way to attach the fishing line to the camera and rig a little parachute to it's back, so if wind does come up the camera itself acts as a breakaway. You might have to attach the line to a nail, or piece of tape to get it out of the frame, before leading to the camera, and tweak it to break away at slightly less than the weight of the line...
    Just an idea.

Great stuff. I was thinking of something like this with a Panasonic FT2/TS2 and fewer but bigger balloons, but I'm coming round to the Gopro because it's lighter. I was wondering how you stop the balloon attachment lines cutting into the styrofoam. Did you reinforce the holes with something? Thanks for showing this film.

Hey Tom howz it! Your a maniac! Awesome and brilliant! I'm gonna try what you did with a Contour HD1080 instead of renting a plane and using a gyro on a dslr! I think you should use this technique in a vid to extract more revenge on Philip B. Just watch out for the FAA chiming in!

Nice, one question, what video editing software do you use to get those sharp images from the GoPro?, I have been using Sony Vegas but never been able to get sharp video like yours.

Sweet! I have to copycat this in a park somewhere here in Copenhagen. My Flip Mino should do the trick :-)

Sadly, the FAA frowns upon having balloons any higher then 500 feet from the base of clouds or flying when the visibility is less then 3 miles. I hope all the people planning on doing this take the FAA part 101 subpart rules seriously: this kind of activity does pose a small, but real risk to pilots if a payload is build tougher.

awesome, but 720p30 has nothing to do with how wide the angle is.

    With a gopro it does!

Looks cool but i would never film anything like that outside of it's protective case in case it fell. The case might protect it on impact. Without it those things are way fragile.

Very clever, I'll be trying this!
