yeah, having Red come over to Vietnam was a total trip. I'm so glad we were able to squeeze this interview in time right before he jumped on the plane to Japan.

Does a full frame 50mm lens have a 50mm focal length or is there a crop factor?

    The lens is Canon 24-70?

The Iphone 4 has the same focus system on the screen...
  • Tonaci Tran plus 1 year ago
Yeah what is cool is that this camera does this with electronic canon lenses. The touchscreen focus is insane.

Hello, has a cost been locked down yet?
  • Shane Aguon plus 1 year ago
Somewhere around $28,000 - $29,000 is what I've heard. I'll stick to my 7D for now.
  • akpe ododoru 1 year ago
(screams) $29,000, i think i'll stick with my 5DII for now and definitely wait for the 5DIII when it comes out.

Peter Jackson is using 30 of these Red Epics to shoot Hobbit. Ridley Scott is using this to shoot the next ALiens Prequel and it is currently being used on Spiderman. Pretty early impressive portfolio I would say.

this is such a weak interview!!! I will keep my 5D Mark II with it's full frame sensor!
  • Tonaci Tran plus 1 year ago
The 5d has a "full frame sensor" that shoots "STILLS" full frame..but video at 1920x1080p. This camera outputs video in RAW (not compressed h.264) at 5120 x 2700. You can check out the reference pixel chart: red.com/images/products/epic/compare.png

Okay I hear you, but two things, One how much editing power would one need to edit in a timely manner with out lag. This is not designed for Indie filmmakers. Two even if you manage to some how out put your work to 5K no tv, movie theatre can maintain that quality, last time I checked their are no 5K projectors and 4K projectors are just now staring to become more of the norm. 1080P to Blu-ray is fine with me anything above that is just a gimmick.

    1) you can edit the proxy files and export to any format size you want. yes, it will take render time during export..but you can drag and drop raw files directly into the Adobe Premiere timeline (for one example) and start cutting right away. 2) all of your work is future proof and your work will have the benefit of having an insane amount of quality when you downsample to 1080p. Look at all the standard def content. It looks like garbage compared to HD. If I had shot my feature film in SD, it would not be able to be released in HD. Likewise, anything shot in HD now will not be able to be released when 4k becomes the standard.

This not a prosumer camera. You are right about that. It is being used on 200 million dollar feature films.

Ali, I own a T2i personally, and I can tell you that neither the T2i nor the 5DmkII is anywhere near the capabilities of the EPIC. Clearly, you are not the target market for the EPIC, and neither am I. If I had 30k to blow on a camera, this would be the camera I blew it on, but at the $1000 price level, you can't beat HDSLRs.

On a side note, native REDcode editing is actually FASTER than native Canon DSLR editing on most NLEs when using the REDrocket. With PPCS5, the difference becomes less of an object because of Mercury.

RED EPIC 006 camera was STOLEN from Mark Pederson's chalet in France. It is the only one in the world outside of RED. Its likely the thieves don't know what they have and how useless it is to them. Every image shot is logged that it was shot from that camera. Everyone who knows about RED will know this and they so far unreleased.

Keep ur ears and eyes open. If you hear anything contact the police or RED directly.

Sure Tonaci was going to post this himself anyway.

Why the photo camera body format? We already have Canon, Nikon, Hasselblad and PhaseOne for that.

This was exactly the main drawback of DSLR format for film makers - awkward holding positions to move the camera.
This hybrid solution seems rather peculiar to me coming from a digital cinematography equipment producer. What do you think?
