Low Light with Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens
After some web research I found an inexpensive (just over $100) Nikon lens that has good low light features, the AF Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens. Then found some good advice on how to achieve the best results and guess what, it worked, no noise or heavy artifacts. Here is some output from the test. I was shooting with only a 60w bulb in the room, hence the yellow cast.
