Absolutely phenomenal. This video both inspires me make better videos and makes me want to give up because nothing I make will be this good.

Can I ask how much raw footage went into this before the final product?
  • Josh, thank you man. I hope you never give up. Go to my youtube page and see how horrible my videos are when I first started. Yours are way better than those. Just experiment with many things to nestle into your style.

It was 12 hours of footage. :/

Oh my goodness. That was amazing! The pace, shots, and music fit together perfectly. I also want to know how much raw footage was shot for this.

Also, did you shoot intentionally to make this piece?
  • Thanks Eric! It was 12 hours of footage. Many shots were intentional, but much of it was candid, trying to capture the life of Lisbon.

so good, so well composed, fantastic cinematography, and a precise edit. You have a shot in there with the boy driving a toy car with his hand, it blends with a view from a train car. That's my favorite part.
  • I really appreciate that, clover. :)

Goose bumps! Incredible work, stunning shots, precise editing and of course the perfect music to these images ... it just feels perfect.

How long did you take to shoot this, how long to edit?
  • Thank you, Nino. :) It took about a week to shoot. And editing was another week...although, it took 3 months to find the right song. I searched through what must've been a couple thousand songs over the last few months and finally landed on this one.
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 year ago
Great - your efforts clearly show. Finding the right music is often the trickiest part, but I love this process.

I know it's a no-go to ask the director about a film's meaning, but can you tell us a bit more? :-)
  • hehe ;)

Yeah, super-sick editing, as usual. You really seem to love highly saturated colors. They are so rich and vivid. Are you bumping them up in post? And I know you laid out your gear about a year ago, but is it still the same? Because the quality of some of the shots -- sh--t! I can't believe you're not using a film (PL mount) lens of some kind. I mean really, why am I fretting about buying L-series lenses if I could learn to get that kind of quality shots out of that gear?!? Will you be giving any classes some time soon? I'm serious.
  • Hehe, I may be showing some things eventually in a tutorial... There are many things happening in post. Much of it happens in the shooting to make sure the light and depth of field are right for the shot... :) One day I will shoot with lenses, but for now I like the challenge. :)

Matthew, your work is still astonished, good cinematography and good photography and editing !!!
When will you develop your movie style in a more composed and longer story way ? :)
  • Thanks, Seb. I have been doing more music videos with a linear storyline...and I will eventually do short films, and then conquer a feature at some point. :) I still have a lot to learn, though. :) And, I need to raise more money to do my shorts.

Congratulations for such an amazing work, Matty!

Imho, this is your most beautiful, deepest and intense movie ever. The music, the sounds, the images, amazing how it all works so well together. I'm really, really honoured that I could take part in this project, somehow. Thanks a lot for accepting the journey!

Btw, I have been reading and apparently the reply of Stephen Hawking to the final question is 'yes'. My reply would undoubtedly be the same.. moments like this one of appreciating each second of this movie make me a happy man :-) Thanks a lot, once again!

    Such an intelligent edit.
You seem to see beyond the image that most of us see.
There is something so unique about your body of work and for that reason, I wait until I have a unintrupted moment to watch what you post......
Where are you going to next?
  • Hey thank you! Hehe.

I am going to the Bahamas this weekend to direct a visual documentary on the world record freediving holder attempting to break his record by diving 100 meters without fins, oxygen, weights, or anything. It'll be my first real underwater video! Very excited! After that, I am thinking about doing a video at auschwitz.

Great to hear. Good luck with everything and I look forward to seeing the finished pieces.

When I was looking at your film, I was thinking you were doing a promo for Portugal! It was strange because some shots would not be accepted for a "promotional movie"... but I was telling to myself: that's the kind of film that makes a portugese proud of his country...
Would you like to do the same in France? Be my guest!
    Bravo pour ce petit bijou!
  • I will definitely be doing a video for France at some point! Thank you for the invite! I'll let you know when I'm coming!
