1. 2019: A Future Imagined
Visual Futurist Syd Mead ("Blade Runner," "Aliens," "Tron") reflects upon the nature of creativity and how it drives the future. Photographed in P2 High Definition, this featurette provides insight into the fascinating mind of one of the most influential artists of modern cinema and automotive design.

wonderful. these concepts and themes are what gives life to my works. human nature and technology are some of the most fascinating subjects.

i'm very excited for all the new possibilities awaiting us, but at the same time, remain aware of the potential risks we will have to face as humans.

thank you so much for making this.

    Why so much lens flare?
  • Michael Heilemann 1 year ago
    It's Syd Mead...
  • Jim Hunter 1 year ago
we intentionally shot with a lot of flaring, knowing Jean-Marc would accentuate them in post. To answer your question . . . in my mind the light somewhat represents the future . . . kind of like a freight train coming right at you! Cheers

    works for me.

The lens flare, the the mirrored refraction, and the music are all very Tangerine Dream - Ridley Scott aka Blade Runner-esque. Period correct and well done.

Good video. I was thinking about this the other day. Looking at the city at night in London, I realised we're living in the future. Plastic, reconstructive and other forms of surgery are augmenting the human body. Computer systems are being developed that can mimic human creativity sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/12/101201124345.htm aging is coming close to being controlled nature.com/news/2010/101128/full/news.2010.635.html IBM is pushing for exascale processing using optics tinyurl.com/27farg6 and so on.

A beautiful film. Strange that Syd Mead uses "growth is logarithmic", when it is the inverse function--exponential that describes growth of technology. I guess it is art over science.

What strikes me most, visually, is the amount of daylight in this interview (I love it, by the way) when compared with both Blade Runner and Tron which are both dominated with images of small artificial lights swallowed up in the seemingly infinite night of the future.

thats really cool. Did Syd Mead create the light cycles in tron? they were pretty rad and cool to see something similar later in Akira (Kanada's bike). I always thought the japanese were more creative in terms of conceptualising the future and conveying such ideas through manga and anime but Syd Mead sums up in 5 minutes what it took an early 1980s manga to explain in 8 books. very insightful.

beautifully shot and chopped i enjoyed it thanks for sharing!!!!
  • Joaquin Montalvan 1 year ago
YES, Syd designed the light cycles in "TRON", and he designed the "TRON" font.

This reminds me of the discussion my Biology class had with our teacher, after we all watched Blade Runner. Incredibly well-spoken and well-said. You've clearly explained what's been sloshing around in my head ever since watching the film.

    You sir, are a genius.

Core of creativity: 1) you must be the engineer solving the problem, 2) you have to DO the things, and 3) you have to be the Uber who can detach yourself from what you are doing to oversee the things you do (constantly studying to see if it the right thing to be doing in the first place). Getting caught up in what you're doing kills. Well said.
