A kinetic typography music video for Jonathan Coulton's Shop Vac. Created using After Effects, Toon Boom Animate, Illustrator, Photoshop and Premiere.

Just fantastic attention to detail Jarrett - nice work!

Perfection. I would love to see a kinetic typography video of "Trapped Inside Your Sofa." I know, I've left this comment several places. I just want to be sure the point has been made.

WOW. This is great! solid key-framing and clever use of imagery. Keep it up!
  •
  • Love it!
  •
  • Robert Dodson plus 1 year ago
Beautiful. How many hours did this take? And how many total typefaces used?
  •
  • Jarrett Heather 1 year ago
I put around 500 hours into it, but as it was my first After Effects project, there was a bit of a learning curve. I could certainly do it faster now.

I think there are around 35 unique typefaces. Futura is the star of the show, and has been my go-to typeface since I got into graphic design 13 years ago.
  • Ian Albinson plus 1 year ago
    Amazing work Jarrett.

Remarkable work Jarrett! Loved the design thought put into and context used for all the lyrics.

Really, really, really brilliant, this video does justice to Coulton's lyrics.

    > At @1:58 - awesome animation for the starbucks bit.

Agreed, though font freaks will note that Google Maps on the iPhone uses Helvetica, not Arial. Otherwise, great work matching type, Jarrett!
  • Jarrett Heather 1 year ago
It's funny you noticed that. The bridge design was inspired by the Google Maps web interface (which does use Arial), but the iPhone transition idea came much later. In fact, the iPhone was the very last thing I added.
  • Stephen Coles 1 year ago
Ahh, that makes sense. And again, most won't notice. It's all very well done.
  •

Quite simply the best "kinetic typography" video that's ever been made. You've set the bar incredibly high.
  • Bob Santoro 1 year ago
I thought the vector animation "The Crisis of Credit" by Jonathan Jarvis was good... but Shop-Vac certainly raises the bar!

I think this might be the best music video of the year. Such a perfect complement to the tone and emotion of the song, and such amazing attention to detail. You've motivated me to start making my own KT videos. Thanks so much for your hard work!

Simply brilliant. I've been a Jonathan Coulton fan, but this video really emphasizes the terrific pop song and the not-so-pop message. I love it.

BTW - went right to iTunes to buy the song. Mr Coulton owe you a Coke.
  •
  • That is completely amazing. I've grown tired of lame "me-too" kinetic typo vids in the past couple of years, but this one is on a totally different level. Plus, I love JC.

    Awesome.

Really inspiring work - my students loved it too. Where can they go to learn how to do what you do? Humor, imagery and timing is right on. You could single-handedly revitalize karaoke with more videos like this. Thank you.

Coulton nails it with the peppy tragedy of a song, and the animation is pitch perfect. This is modern art.

Excellent work Jarrett! Echoing the sentiments of many above me, timing, humor, and imagery really make this more than the song was by itself!

Thanks for the hard work! Keep with it!

This is witty and sophisticated. You've kept it fresh--not at all imitative--and done justice to the spirit of the music. Excellent job. Love the tongue-in-cheekiness of the song, as well.

Ah, good job on the solo Vince! I'm hoping you have at least a passing resemblance to Mr Coulton, lest people might think the cartoon is dishonest. :)

This is one of the greatest videos I have ever seen. Every time I watch it I'm in awe. I'm so glad you put it on Vimeo so that I could download it in a higher quality. A friend posted it on my Facebook wall a month ago, and it wasn't quite as good quality. Looks even more stunning here.
