This animation we did was planned and animated for the prologue of a documentary.
(That explains the absurd, unfinished seeming, ending.That is where the actual documentary starts.... )
The briefing was to show an evolution of computer games.
The documentary itself is about different people, based here in germany, showing their everyday life, and their addiction to the same specific, famous MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role playing game):"Wo.."
Every game character in this prologue was reinterpreted, redrawn (...one pixel at a time), and animated frame by frame.

The pong sequence in the beginning is this long on purpose. It was at the request of the client... Had sth. to do with the cinema presentation.Kind of an Intro-Intro.
Anyway - great animation that I enjoyed watching.
What was your process for animating in this style? Did you use any special software?
No special software.
First I drew every animation step of all characters with the smallest sized (1x1) pen in Photoshop at 72 dpi. (without bicubic interpolation).
Then I composed everything in AfterFX.
There were a lot of issues I had to cope with to keep the detailed REAL pixel look/ratio.(e.g . scaling, camera an d motion blurs...)
I wish I knew what you just told me, it would've saved me alot of time on something I was working on.
but you DID use some footage/pixel grafics from the original games right??

Ne Du, war ALLES selbst handgepixelt.Inkl. aller Bewegungsabläufe-> die meisten gibts so in den Originalgames garnich. Klar - um die jeweiligen Spiele auch als solche zu erkennen musste man manche Sachen schon näher ans Original anlehnen.Zb. "Lechuck" aus monkey island.
Musste halt alles n bisschen "customizen" um nen einheitlicheren look zu erhalten.
"1000000 hours of pixeling" sag ich da nur...hehe.
Ja und ich seh grad Du kennst ja auch den Bartellow- Beni und den Amir! haha, wie klein die Welt... :)
