Alfred Preis was born in Vienna, Austria in 1911. After graduating from high school in 1929, Alfred Preis traveled throughout Europe and later returned to Vienna to study architecture. In 1939, he and his wife Jana, left Nazi-occupied Austria for Hawaii. In 1943, Alfred Preis opened his own architectural office. Alfred Preis is best known as the designer of the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Alfred Preis died in 1993.
