I, as an American, consume anywhere from 70-100 gallons of water each day; whereas the developing world consumes a little under 3 gallons of water each day. I take this for granted. Seldom do I even consider those who are dying from dehydration or even diarrhea [caused by the infectious diseases inside the 3 gallons of water each day they get to drink].

This spot was a last-minute project. It was shot and edited in about 10 hours. We've been shooting all week on another production and were able to get away for an hour to shoot this. It was shot on the RED ONE and was edited in 4K [via the amazing ProRes(HQ) codec] with Final Cut Pro. Motion tracking and graphics were done in After Effects CS3.

Very cool video! I can't believe your church shoots with a Red camera.

Ah, I wish we did! It was just for this one week, as we were renting a RED for a project involving Francis Chan's book, "Crazy Love."

That's awesome! I would have shooting EVERYTHING i could think of.

  • Great vid, how easy is it to do the text, as it gives the vid an extra edge. Keep up the good work :)

Sorry, I still don't understand how can WE save water for THEM. We are at our places, they are at theirs. And water circulates in this ground-sky circle (we flush it down, it goes up) and so.. I may have lost my point, but still - please explain. It's not like me saying "This is crap" - I just don't get it. Thanks.

And I loved tracking. Um, what point did u select for motion tracking? Looks very good. I will definately try this.

I agree. It's a nice spot but, I was waiting to see what exactly can be done about this. Also I wondered about the motion tracking. Thought it was shot through a sheet of glass with letters on it.
  • kaspars plus 10 months ago
well..sheet of glass would explain a lot..like sheet of glass with a little point on it for tracking.. okay, let's wait for author to speak.

    1. The unresolved ending was intentional. This video was created for a Sunday morning service in September of 2008 -- the outlet for "changing this problem" came in the form of a $100,000 donation to an organization that deals directly with this water crisis. If this raises awareness in an unintended way, great! But you are right, in this setting... it's left unresolved. It's not like flushing your toilet is directly going to help those who don't have water. But yeah, find an organization and give money to it if you feel led!
    2. The motion-tracking was done simply with AE's motion tracker. Nothing complex, no crazy tricks... just found a few points that worked well for tracking and AE did the rest. The 4k resolution may have helped it a bit :)
  • kaspars plus 10 months ago
Oh..Those 4k definitely did something, it's so smooth. And those points you found worked realy great. ;)

Good video - I think I read similar proportions apply in relation to other commodities and resources.

My interpretation of your video was not so much that US consumers should use less water, but rather that much greater efforts should be made to ensure adequate water supplies in other parts of the world.

I found this article on the subject interesting and scary:

Great piece of edutainment! I featured it on my blog to explain how these visual communication spots can have a greater impact on people awareness. Brilliant idea.

Please spill the beans about how you did the text, it is amazingly cool.
  • Jesse 9 months ago
he just tracked part of the video, then parented the motion of the track to the text to get it to move in that way. Notice the text moves the same direction as the video, thats a key way of busting the way he did it.

Really nice video, loved the simplicity. I can totally see how it would have fit in on Sunday morning. The video makes me wish I could have been there!

The developing world uses 2.6 gallons a day? Don't you mean that people in the developing world use that much per day?

Our language is easy to mess up with...

Great video, really well shot. The motion tracking on the captions is great, a really nice touch.

The only thing really is that on a couple of shots the text could have used an outline to make it stand out more? But it looks great anyway, good work!

really good work, nice idea and great composition.

but those numbers are too complex use 3 instead of 2.9... too many too complex numbers you can't really put into picture or just use graphics... like a diagram with a bucket... that would be a lot more impressive and easier to understand... instead of having to do some calculation to get the real picture (literally)...

Wow, you do use a lot of water a day. My whole family of 5 only use around 100 gallons a day.

Haha, someone already beat me to being cynical about how much water you probably spent doing this video. It's sponsored by... a... church? No further questions your honor

Great video. One question though. Is the Pro Res HQ really 4K?
  •
  • Chris Light 7 months ago
noone will ever see this in 4k, so it doesn't matter.

Hey man nice short! Did you make the focus soft intentionally? Personally I like it...I was just curious if and why?
