Hey ! ya don't need a mac to upgrade 2.1 to download installer or cydia. If ya have a computer runinnig windows xp media center edition 2005 or a higher windows you too can get these app on ya iphone 3g... I did without a mac... I'm just letting it be known that it is possible and i watch the video where the guy using his friend's mac computer. It actually took his iphone 3g longer with a mac computer then it did with my windows computer. Mines took about 5 mins his was about 10 da full length of his video...
