It's easy for college students to isolate themselves in their university and not go beyond the comfort of their school's walls. This video highlights the relationship between Duke University and the surrounding city of Durham, looking at how civic engagement programs like America Reads and Counts can get students out into the community and make a difference.
America Reads and Counts is a federal work study program that gives public school children a chance to have one-on-one tutoring from college students. Duke's program is one of over a thousand different programs in the country. ARAC at Duke works in 10 public schools in Durham and tutors hundreds of children every year in math and reading.
