Napa County Reads is an annual program and fundraiser to support literacy amongst school-aged youth co-partnered by Arts Council Napa Valley and the Napa County Office of Education. Each year, the Napa County School district selects a book to be read by 5th graders in the Valley. Along with reading the book, the children create a bookmark themed after the book. Four bookmarks are chosen to be the official "Napa County Reads" bookmarks and distributed throughout Napa County libraries. Conjointly, a "canvas" such as mailboxes or bookends are chosen for Napa County artists including high school student artists to create a unique work of art themed after the book to be auctioned at the "Reads Reception" each Fall. A stipend for art supplies is provided for the artists by the Sato Foundation.
For the year 2010, the book selected is "SHIFTY" by Lynn E. Hazen. The story is about a 15 year old boy who is in foster care. The canvas on which eighteen Napa County artists will create their unique work of art based after the book will be wooden planters.
