Hey, I happened to watch this with Sarah Vaughan - "If you could see me" on the background. I think it was even better than the song you used. You should try it :)

Michael, really nice work. I liked your shot composition, tilts and pans, slow-mo and the shift to B&W. Editing was really nice also. Looks like you had a nice pre-set to work with. Also liked the music. Who was the composer?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Thanks Mark. The music was from the Movie "The Thin Red Line", one of my favorite movies of all time. Great soundtrack by Hans Zimmer.

I am so glad I watched that, what stunning work you do!! You broadened my life a bit. Thanks.

  • Some beautiful moments in there. Great stuff!

In a couple of shots that dark vignette is really quite distracting, did you do that in post or is it that your adapter/lens combo. I would try and dial that back a little, less is more IMHO.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Done in post. Get vignette using letus if using a wide angle lens, but OK with the other lenses i have tried.

Mind if I ask what song was used here? I'm always amazed that so many video artists don't credit musical artists!

Anyway, that was really beautiful. Nice work.

Music is from the movie "The Thin Red Line" by Hans Zimmer. I'll credit the music next time mate.

Really great stuff here, Michael. I was also impressed by the smooth, slow tilts and pans. The shots in "scope" are a hair too wide, but that's nit-picky of me. Beautiful work. Loved the shot of the photographer's shadow against the large rock. The wind mill stuff was fantastic as well.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Thanks mate. I used the widescreen option in Final Cut to get the pano look and agree the 3:1 ration is to wide for video. The next option 2.35:1 is a tad too narrow if you know what I mean. They need to give you the option to set it exactly where you would want it.

Definetly a very beautiful result but I'm more interested on how the Cano XHA1 works under low lighting conditions and under the use of artificial lighting.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Every-time I use it in low light I'm disappointed in the result. It's probably because I dont know what i'm doing. Using the gain gives to much grain and street lights etc. end up too red even with the white balance adjusted to the coolest setting. Someone must have a preset for using this camera at low light conditions. Haven't tried under artificial lighting but should be OK with the correct White Balance settings. Thanks Mate.

As I used to be in the music for some 25 years as a record producer I am well acquainted with the power of the senses regarding sound and vision.

I always look at a film twice, the first time with the sound on, and then in total silence.

It is only when you do this you can see 100% the film.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Great advice Rex. It's so different without sound.

    Michael,

Nice touch. The shot of the big rocks with the silhouette on them was very cool.

The time lapse shot with the clouds and the windmill. How many minutes of tape did that use - approxiamately?

How long have you been shooting?

    Trey
  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Hi Trey, I have been shooting video for approximately 1 year now. I have a long way to go. As you cant under or overcrank the XHA1 I generally shoot for about 10 minutes and speed up the footage in Final Cut 1000%. This will give a 1 minute clip in fast-mo.

This is super stuff, Michael. That shot at 1:10 was quite stunning. Some lovely footage in that short, I'm really impressed.

Thanks Greg. That scene was at Cable Beach, Broome, Western Australia. The photographer was my brother Christian Fletcher. We were on a holiday/work trip. You can check out Christians images at christianfletcher.com.au I think you will be impressed he's a great photographer and a great source of inspiration.

  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Widescreen in Final Cut gives you a number of different cropping sizes. I used 3:1 ratio.

  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Thanks Frederic. That was a self portrait. It was a windy shitty day as it usually is in Albany W.A. I made the most of the conditions and came up with that. I made it Black & White because the color was dull. Glad you liked it.

It was intresting to see what came in the next shot. Intrigue. I already don't say about superb picture and post production work. Intresting, that aspect ratio change from 2:06 till end, it has been conceived?

    Hi Mark,

wow! Amazing video compositions. Beautiful, rich, lush colors!
What filters did you use on "Images of Western Australia"?
  •
  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Hi Greg. Most of the footage was straight out of the camera. No filters used. I have color graded using Final Cut Pro pushing the saturation up.

My footage is no way near your guitar playing nice work mate!!!!. I play drums but wouldn't rate a mention along side a true artist such as yourself.
  •
  • Greg Reiter 1 year ago
Thanks for the kind words Michael! :) Compliments right back at ya! Your compositions are really inspiring, and you are a true artist! I'm about to embark on a month long photo Safari in Africa, and after seeing your video composition, I am fully confident in what the XHA1 can do with nature shots, as your video sold me on the quality of this camera. I was searching for just the right HD camera, but needed to use tapes, as I originally had my heart set on the HVX200a, but downloading footage onto my laptop was a "no-no" from my wife. But it looks like I made the right choice, with your help of course. :)
Did you use 24f and a really low shutter speed for the opening shot? My guess is 1/24th?
I've been experimenting with mountain landscape shots, and no matter how low I set everything, I still seem to get lots of noise. Any tips to getting rid of noise in low light sunrise shots?
Thanks, and it's great to meet you!
    -Greg

Low Light is a problem for me also. Cant remember what the settings on the camera were as it was almost a year ago. Never use the gain to increase the light into the camera as the trade off is too much grain. Try using different presets for your camera. There are a number out there. I found a number on dvinfo.com

Use a graduation filter on the front of the camera so you can increase the exposures of the forground without blowing out your skys during sunrise and sunset. I use filters by Lee.

You can slow up the shutter speed just so long as there is not too much movement in the scene. Try to shoot in brighter conditions. As you know each sunrise is different and it can be hit and miss with getting good footage. Dont point the camera too close to the sun as all that achieves is a big blown out blob of yellow. Most times the best scene is in the opposite direction to the sun.

Good luck in Africa Greg, dont get eaten.!!!! Ha Ha.....

Hey man really liked your video. How did you get the smooth pans? where you using a boom of some kind or just a tripod?
  •
  • Michael Fletcher plus 1 year ago
Hi jason. Most of the smooth pans were created in final cut pro using the widescreen mode and adjusting the offset with keyframes to get top to bottom pans. Some stuff was done using a homemade dolly. Some stuff was from using the motion tab in FCP to zoom in.

    Thanks for watching.

Great choice of music, but you should have asked an aspiring composer to score your images, rather than steal from an established artist. There are so many musicians striving for a break scoring movies. Would you like it if a composer stole your imagery to sell their music?

Didn't steal it I paid for it.

As soon as i get the time and money, i am going to set out with my EX1 and Letus to try and get something like this going, i love it! i just need to make sure i get some good glass, any recommendations? at the moment i only have a Canon EF 50mm and a EF 17 - 85mm, but im not sure if i should even use the 17 - 85?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 10 months ago
We only use Prime Canon Lenses. 50mm and 85mm are crackers. 400mm is good also 24mm seems a bit soft. Am trying a 35mm fd canon lens with the XHA1 so I can control the aperture.
