ULM TLRC: An Unedited Sample Flip Video Clip
1 year ago
This very brief video clip was created with the inexpensive "Flip" video camera. The video file (.avi) was unedited.
ADVANTAGES
1. "Flip" video quality is good. It takes very acceptable video even with fluorescent lighting.
2. The Flip video camera is very easy to use.
3. You can take an hour's worth of video clips.
4. A brief UNEDITED video clip can be created, viewed, and uploaded within just a few minutes.
5. To add your video as an online resource, just provide a link to this video. That's all. In this example, you would provide this link: vimeo.com/1772554
6. Creating a free video account with Vimeo is easy.
7. Vimeo uses high quality "streaming"; students can view your video from any computer with Internet access.
DISDVANTAGES
1. The sound quality, although clear, is a bit muted.
2. If you need to edit video, it is resource-intensive and time-consuming. (If you use brief unedited clips, this is NOT a problem).
TIPS
1. Use an inexpensive tripod. This greatly enhances video quality.
2. Speak a bit louder than normal.
3. Keep video clips very short. About 15 to 45 seconds per clip is recommended.
4. Make 2 or 3 "takes". Then choose one of the video files to upload. This avoids editing!
5. If you have a lot of content, break it down into a related series of brief video clips.
6. Keep your brief videos as DENSE as possible. Focus on your topic. Only refer to resources ("Chapter 5 in your text"; "on page 125 of your text"; "the link in today's online activity in Moodle"). Students greatly appreciate this.
7. Ask questions but don't answer them completely.
8. Tell students what is important ("This will be on the test.").
9. Encourage.
10. Make it relevant: Why do they need to know this?
11. Don't be afraid to express passion. This is always appreciated because students really like instructors who care. Let it show!
12. If you want to update a video, just delete an existing video and replace it. It's easy with Vimeo.
