A vibrant and friendly Township Walkabout
1 year ago
Xolile Speelman is a well known guide, born and bred in UMasizakhe Township (1850) (10.000 people) at Graaff-Reinet in the Karoo South Africa. He speaks Xhosa, Afrikaans and the click language see: youtube.com/watch?v=gytCi5a7AJg . He is living with his pretty wife and triplet daughters (with fun wiggs) in one of the free Nelson Mandela houses.
Xolile showed us his people, their sunday dresses, his house and their fascinating religions and churches. The Zionist big group in white dresses was in a very hot small room for 6 houres! In another church we thought people were fighting but it was the transilator! We also saw the house of PAC leader Robert Sobukwe one of the cellmates of Nelson Mandela living there.
I filmed with a small camera afraid to get mobbed, but all was so safe afterwards we were ashamed to think so! We also visited his mother het tribe usually cuts the left little finger! Sorry no English but he speaks his native language Afrikaans and we love that, because it is very simular to our Dutch. But with this intro you'll understand it all.
It is also worthwhile to take a drive to the spectacular Valley of Desolation and to the Karoo Nature Reserve a few minutes northwest of the town. The 14.000 hectare reserve is well stocked with game. Particularly mountain zebra, wildebeest, springbok and gemsbok are numerous, but also many other mammal and bird species.
Whenever you go there, we know some very good places to stay and nearby is an exeptional art museum The Owlhouse in Nieu Bethesda.
