Nice sequence. Were you using lights or was that afternoon sun? Also, any post color correction? Thanks!

yeah you got some great colors in your shots. was all of that natural or some post production? also, what do you use to edit?

These sequences where shot late afternoon when the sun was low, some CC, just played with contrast and saturation. I used Premiere CS3 for editing.

I really like your adapter/FX7 stuff. How does it compare to the D90 in your opinion now? It looks like the D90 is harder to focus. Do you think it will replace your FX7? Thnx for posting the tests!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
I like my adapter/fx7 stuff a lot but what I like most about the D90 its the stealth mode, you can go anywhere and nobody will give a second look at you, with the adapter/fx7/rail... forget it... they stare at you like you have a shotgun in your hand... lol

I cant shot without DOF anymore, I spend so many hours building my adapter and now its the way I want it to be...to bad, since the D90 came out... I didn't touch the FX7 and I will probably sell it. Anyways for my needs the D90 will be more than enough... for now. :)
  • Bionicpix 1 year ago
Wow, thanks for your opinion on that, Roland. I totally agree that "stealth mode" is a big plus. For me, it's hard to shoot around LA without a permit, so that's very nice. I have an old Letus and it makes a great picture most of the time, but it's fragile and dust can get on the screen. I'm pretty much sold on the new HD SLRs. Cheers and congrats on the new camera!

What settings do you generally use for F stops and exposure?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
    Thanks parthiv,

You cant adjust F stops in D-Movie (only with full manual lens you can, AI,AIS..) so generally I move the camera in live view mode until I'm satisfied with what i see (in live view the camera constantly adjust the iso and shutter speed) then I lock AE-L and shot... that's it. I'm now experiencing with manual lens... that's another story.

Hi Roland congrats for u're new D90,the pictures are film like, love a lot,,,definitely the industry will change with these capable cameras,I can't believe seeing this, apart from the in camera compression it's using, the images are clean and very nice shallow dof same like 35mm movie cameras
  •
  • DigitAlchemist 1 year ago
24p is fictional ,that's the great beauty of it compared to 60i or 50i which is like soap TV shows , that's a time long ago i've been fiddling with 50i to get that fictional look of 24P,,now I will embrace this new D90...wow can't believe it......

    Great looking stuff.

And i'm on the same page with the "stealth mode" - that might be enough to make me get one.

The converse problem to this is that while this image blows my DVX100 out of the water, I don't know if I could show up to a shoot with just a D90 and some sound gear and take myself seriously. But the price for that is incredible too. Are you considering doing full video productions with just this camera? What's your workaround for sound?

Nikon has made LEAPS in convergence with this camera.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Nick,
Yeah sounds weird to show up at a shoot with just a D90 in your pocket...
I will probably go with this for sound, zoom.co.jp/english/products/h2/ or the H4.

Check this forum for good information about the D90

Super video, could you tell me how to import the raw video in premiere, you need a motion jpg codec ? What'your choice ? I 've tried an old "morgan MJPeG" but had a bad quality

I just import them from premiere and have no problems at all, I didn't install any specific codecs since I have the D90.

Impressive. Very nice shots and great colors. Roland, what type of SD card have you used? Is the 15MB/s enough for video with the D90? Thanks!
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
Thanks Loris, I use an ATP Class 6, 4gb. Up to 22.5MB/sec read speed. A 15MB/s should be good enough.

    Hi Papicante,

You will need a fast lens for low light, preferably an f1.4. I know the sound is not good, its mono so... for better sound I just ordered a ZOOM H2 HANDY RECORDER zoom.co.jp/english/products/h2/ I will just sync in post.
  • Ivan Mbakop 10 months ago
    My never-seen buddy Roland, so...
you are recommending f1.4 lenses. They make those in both wide angle, normal (50) and long (100+) formats? if so those would be the most expensive possible on the market right? And they would be prime... not zooms.

Hey Roland, thank you for the clip! It looks very good. Quick question - I think I noticed some wobble of the images in couple of shots. Do you notice it as well? Is it an overwhelming problem in D90? Does it happen when you pan? Thanks
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
Thanks Rati, yes the wobble is a problem, you have to handle the camera with caution (I'm getting better at it), you can achieve great panning with the proper stabilization.

    Un Super job!!
Did you do any conversion to 25p, and if not,
how does it show on a DVD?
    Thx - Piet
  • Roland Cadieux plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Piet,

I didn't do any conversion to 25p, I didn't make any DVD from it yet, but I doubt it will produce great quality. D90 footage works well on the Web, when I played it on my big HDTV via my computer, its weaknesses become more apparent.

Great stuff Roland. This is the very first D90 video I've seen and thanks to you I'm already convinced to go get one. Your other videos are great as well. By the way, I was curious if you've been having any problems with it lately. Like from what I heard, if you record video for a long period time, it starts to shut down. Has that happened to you?
  • Roland Cadieux plus 11 months ago
    Thank you!

It will start to shut down after a period of around 25 minutes non-stop shooting... need to take a break after... never happened to me yet.

Good job Roland, I think I'm going to start saving up for a D90 as the only reason I haven't purchased a DSLR is because I like to take video as well as photos. Now there's no excuse... :P Are you able to use zoom while filming? I don't think i've seen a video of the D90 zooming in and out yet.

As for your comment about wanting a steady cam, my friend and I made one using "Johnny Lee's Poor Man Steady Cam" instructions. I posted a test comparison video with a link to the instructions to make your own on the info section. It cost me about $20 and an hour to make. :)

    youtube.com/watch?v=la3SjBQzzdc&fmt=18
  • Roland Cadieux plus 10 months ago
    Thanks Jiggajayd,

You can use zoom while filming if you have the lens for it. but the problem is the focus, you have to focus manually so it's not an easy task.

If you watch my recent video you will see that I purchase a Merlin, I sold it and I made a DIY version of it. I will post a test from it soon.

Wow. This is some neat stuff. Beautiful.

"Terminating Movie Recording. Please Wait." And the cam is not overheating... I dunno what's wrong with it. You have any idea?
i searched Google in it's entirety with no success.

    Thanks Roland!

Wow... full of info... will start the reading tonight. i just hope to shoot like you one day :)
I have the kit, 18-105... why do people bother buying for example a 50mmm f1.8? since the kit covers all those focal ranges?
  • ZhiC 10 months ago
  • Ivan Mbakop 10 months ago

  • Ivan Mbakop 10 months ago

    1. Without engaging LV mode, set the camera in Manual Mode. If you're already in Live View, exit.
    2. Turn on AE-L (hold), you can check to see if it's active by peerin' into the viewfinder for the AE-L icon.
    3. Close your Iris down to an f5.6 ~ 8
    4. Aim the camera at a wall or surface that's brightly lit. It should not be blown out, but bright. I would say just about sixty-percent (60%) Exposed or a little more.
    5. Activate LV mode.
    6. Open the Iris to a 2.8 or 1.4 and check the cleanliness. Not to mention the 1/30 ~ 1/60th shutter.

Thanks & Happy new year to you and your family!
  •

"I don't know if Nikon engineers wanted to, but they fixed this problem. Now you can have an "auto bracketing" in self timer mode. In menu C3 choose self timer and in same menu select the number of shoots you want to take with self timer. This feature (number of shoots) does the trick. Set it to 3 shoots and (to make bracketing easier) set self timer to 2 seconds. "Engage" bracketing. Press shutter relese button and Nikon D90 takes 3 shoots automaticaly. Each exposed differently, as you set it in bracketing option. Nice, ha? "

    amazon.com/Timer-Vertical-Battery-Remote-Control/dp/B00192NV0Y/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1222253292&sr=1-3

thinking of getting this camera but have heard and scene a lot of jellowing and flickering, but on some vids, yours included have none of that. I have also heard you can not lock the ap or exposure but from your vid looks like you have, could you explane? main purpose for the camera? video or pics. any info will be much appreciated.. The wife wants a new camera and I want a new HD camera without breaking the bank.
  •
  • Roland Cadieux plus 8 months ago
You can lock the exposure by setting: AE-L on hold when you press it: Menu > Custom Settings (Pencil Icon) > f (controls) >> Assign AE-L/AF-L Button > Ae lock (hold) > Ok, if you are careful while handling the D90 you can achieve footage without wooble.

I sold my FX7, now I use the D90 for both videos and photos. For me it was a good decision, I don't regret it.

Hi Roland. Few weeks ago i bought Canon SX1, but now i'm changing my minds. When i see at this video, i'm not sure if i don't know how to use my Canon, which btw shoots 1080i HD video, or just D90 is that better as i can see here. Tell me please, did you use some light, or some post production, or it can be recorded just like that? Soo film like, blur background(open aperture), incredible colors...how can it be done? Do i just have to buy Nikon D90 and i will have this, or there is something else. Sorry for long writing, but i'm very surprised. Thank you.
  • Roland Cadieux plus 8 months ago
Hi Kiro, I didn't use any light in this video, These sequences where shot late afternoon when the sun was low, some CC, just played with contrast and saturation. the D90 shot in 24p, you can achieve similar results with some practice.
