For over 20 years a bloody civil war has raged in northern Uganda. The conflict is the longest and perhaps most brutal in the history of the African continent. Today northern Uganda is an area of permanent crisis in a chronic state of emergency. »Out of the Ashes« illuminates the situation of women in the disputed area and shows their efforts to find a way back to normality in the cur- rent fragile peace. As central figures within their families and as a growing economic force, women are acquiring a decisive role in the socially fractured structure of the region.
