This is a demo for my new feature NightLight. Hand drawn animation, rotoscoping and light drawing all play an important part in the film and we wanted to start defining these visual concepts early. All the light drawing is done with three sizes of flash lights. No light effects were added in post.

This spot contains an intro HD video sequence and then three separate photo sequences with the longest consisting of over sixty individual long-exposure photographs. We shot the whole thing in twelve hours.

Well I've been meaning to knock out a little "making of" but here's a short recap.

I drew with flashlights around her while taking 50 sec long exposure photos. (over 100 in all - took us 12 hrs.)

Basically the first half is HD video and the second half is all digital long exposure photos. The tricky part was obviously the photos, which we did primarily in darkness with an average of a 50 sec exposure time. We had a large flash set up to grab a still, then we had to leave the lamp on (in the background) for a certain amount of time to match the exposure of the HD video and then of course I had to draw the physical light lines around her by hand using a few different sizes of flash lights. This test was about matching the video footage to the lightdrawing . The next one will be more about the design of the drawings themselves and what they mean.

    Thanks.

    thanks for the explanation,

not sure what you mean when you say

"I had to draw the physical light lines around her by hand using a few different sizes of flash lights"

how did you draw them, in photoshop??

He means that he set his camera to have a long exposure and then he took a light and moved it around in the air, physically "drawing" with light. The camera picks up all the movements he made with the lights and therefore produces an image that appears to have lines of light drawn in it. I love that effect!
