To Be Sung is a chamber opera - and this performance is the maiden voyage of kallisti, a vocal ensemble at University of California, San Diego and led by faculty member Susan Narucki. (kallisti.ucsd.edu)
What's going on in this piece? A combination of haunting, exquisite music by French composer Pascal Dusapin; and astonishing text by American writer Gertrude Stein. There is no traditional story, and yet as the piece unfolds we see that things are constantly happening; the women fall in love with color, the women sing and work together, the women are begging for kisses, the women are frozen in the heat of the desert - all the while relating to the one male figure whom we see at the beginning and end of the work - but whose voice is omnipresent.
Our instrumental ensemble, Palimpsest, was conducted by Julian Pellicano. The four ladies are Stephanie Aston, Tiffany Du Mouchelle, Leslie Leytham and Meghann Welsh, and the male speaker is Philip Larson. The lighting design was done by Nick Patin, and I directed.
We were so lucky to have American Sign Language interpreters, Billieanne McClellan and Amy Hart, courtesy of our friends at the Capita Foundation. Thank you!
