"The moment that you stepped into the room you took my breath away"
Taking the vibrant pallette of the people, art and pulse of the city itself, THE BARCELONA CANVAS is a grand project for Mael Films. It was one that spanned over a year in the making and took in two Summer visits to Spain's very own New York.
The film is greatly inspired by the films and soundtracks of Pedro Almodóvar (ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, LIVE FLESH and THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET), the architecture of Antoni Gaudi ("God's architect"), the 1992 Olympics and the anonymous street art that dresses the streets with the same elegance and vibrancy the people do.
From modernist visions of architectural utopias to elegant young divers with an ancient backdrop via midnight skateboarders, the Cuban-esque outpost that is Sitges, the drag queens of the gay district, the athletes of the 2010 European Championships, Salvador Dali, biblical cathedral projects, Freddie Mercury's operatic anthem, the underground world of the back-streets and a tapestry of chilled, eccentric, nuts and often very beautiful people and sights, THE BARCELONA CANVAS is maybe Mael Films most rich outing and certainly our most vibrant and personal.
"Understand how far you can go".
