A reflection on What it means to be creative.
Original music by Palmer Taylor blackdoveaudio.com

Featuring the Flip phone.
Flip phone is based on a concept concieved during a 6 week long workshop done by my self Kristian Ulrich Larsen, Ewa Sendecka, Jeppe Vestergård and Victoria Kusk. It was then developed further for a semester by me Kristian Ulrich Larsen as part of my MA program at Kolding school of design dskd.dk

such a great idea ! but i guess hard to make it work (even as a prototype)

and the video is full of poetry :)

What is the music app used in the video?

Remembering Light, now on iTunes by Palmer Taylor.

The battery life would only last like, 10 minutes, but it's a very cool concept.
  • yeah i see what you mean, but the idea is that only the screen facing the user is on, controled by the accelerometer, you can then activate the other screens manually with a touch gesture.
  • Artur Grabias 1 year ago
It's a good idea. Maybe other displays could be solar screens? This is a large space - charge should be effective.
  • Kof-i 1 year ago
Maybe the screens could be made from e-ink techniques, like the liquavista company is developing. this technique is already slated to cause a batterylife revolution, and this design would be a very good use of this technique.

I didn't found it on your website.

I had a nightmare about a nearly identical product when I was 10. I was obsessed with the Sony Clié, and in my dream I got one, but every time I tried to open it, it would flip back around itself and expose screen after screen. I'm not sure why it was a nightmare now...

How did you make the prototype in the video? Is it mostly greenscreened in, or do you have a functioning machined model?

Inspired design. The mechanics must be a challenge: they'd need to be ultra-high quality. In the mid-90s I had a Psion clamshell style device (pre-Palm and very ahead of its time), but the folding mechanism was a weak point and the hinge eventually broke.
I'd certainly love to have a device like this. Android, too. :)

I like the idea, I think there would be battery issues. This type of device will probably not be perfected without some nano-tech. Maybe in the process they could build in some solar collectors to help the battery life.
Also, about the accelerometers, if the active screen stays at the top, what happens if the person is lying down looking up at the device???

I can attest to the power of mistakes. As a guitar player, a slight alteration from the norm; a mistake, is usually the energy needed to direct a song to its final destination. Often times, mistakes are those meaningful moments in the creative process.

    Hi, Kristian and commentators!

I love the video, the message and the mobile phone. :) And indeed I found it so interesting that I've just added English, Spanish and Catalan captions to your video via youtube.com and universalsubtitles.org.

I couldn't understand four sentences from the narrator. If you tell me the text I missed, I'll add it.

    Here's the link: universalsubtitles.org/en/videos/5Gt2WGZiDicm/

    Best regards!

    Hello!
There are still some missing words, but it may help you improving your work :)

0:10 0:15== Creativity is no longer a word reserved for the musician or the artist

0:18 0:24== It’s the ability and the urge to make something of value

1:18 1:22== It’s about realising that there isn’t always a right or a wrong way of doing things

1:28 1:32== What’s common for creativity is that it comes from inspiration

1:41 1:55== It’s fun when we share with them,( ?) in what’s given from the diversity of people’s thoughts and perspectives, so try and drop the assumptions that you know how to do things and already know the solution. Stray away from the ( ?) to ( ?)

2:04 2:07== and it’s from the mistakes that the really interesting things happen

    Hello Kristian,

I stumbled across your video clip on engaget.com and wondering where I can get my hand on this phone. This thinking leaded me to this site. So, it's only in the development/prototype stage. I can't wait that it would soon be the reality stage, so I can buy it.

The phone is (will always be for me) so beautiful and amazing as you are. You are a genius and an artist. You have my respect and admiration.

    Regards

Nicely done! Would love to see it rather than just plain slippery metal. Make it something warm or rough enough on the handles like a cloth may be so it won't easily slip through your hands. Light, flexible, creative, easy to handle, perfect.
