I took the Nikon D90 down to Union Station to capture some natural lighting and great architecture with the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens.

Edited and rendered with Sony Vegas Pro 8, no color correction or filters. Music is Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music For Airports - 1/1

If you have the time while visiting Los Angeles, I would urge you to put Union Station on your list of sites to see.

Very nice work. Did you speak to the cleaning lady? She's moving perfectly in frame, almost as if she has been instructed to do so.
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
I was shooting and she came into frame to do her work, I eventually had to move so she could finish, or she would have mopped my feet.

Very beautifully shot, well done. Your footage seems not to exhibit any of the rolling shutter issues that the other clips on the site show. Can I ask you what the average shutter speed was? Is the camera capable of motion blur?
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
I had it on a tripod for 95% of the footage, so that takes the jello frames out of the equation.

Very serene... so peaceful when a big city winds down...

How do you like your Nikkor 50mm f1.8? I JUST got mine and will test it on the d90 when I have a little spare time.

Hey, just noticed that your file is 73mb for 2:39min... that's really good, at least comparing to what I get. What compression codec/settings do you use?

    Great footage! keep it coming
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
yeah, it's nice to see the lulls in busy places.

The lens is very nice, great for the price.

I used the main concepts MP4 output in Vegas, defualt settings other than I had to customize the 1280x720 frame size for output.

I'm looking forward to a faster lens so I can shoot more low light without noise. Did you do the noise trick or let the camera adjust exposure for you?

In regards to a person above, reason you don't see rolling shutter is because he acutally put it on a tripod or kept it steady long enough to get a shot. You can't adjust shutter either.
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
The "noise trick" is the only way to get a clean image at these low light levels. I had the camera wide open for most shots and a few shots I left it open to add the "glowing effects"

    @ Rich Hibner:
Can't adjust shutter?? But how do you set the video mode for daylight or night shots??? I hope its not some digital compensation. Or do you mean you dont have control over it but the camera adjusts shutter.
So you could point it at something bright and lock the AE-L...

There is shearing in the 5DMkII as well...visible even in the professionally made Laforet video (scene shot from inside the car - back of the hero's head). So, the D90 is pretty good for the price.

What's your way of "noise trick". My way is to find a white wall with some light stop the lens down to 8,11 and let the camera auto expose lock it and open the iris up.
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
    roughly the same

What a nice meditation in motion. You demonstrate (in this one and in your other videos) a good sense of composition and also that less is more. Nice choice of music.
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
    Thanks!

I'm a firm believer that less is more.

I'm blown away. Very nice footage sir!

Didn't realise a DSLR could do video at 24fps. What kind of resolution can the D90 do at those speeds?
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
    Thanks!

720p is the max resolution, for TONS of details check here:

Thanks for that. I wonder if Canon would be coming up with something that does that in the near future. They don't like to be outdone do they?
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
EOS 5D Mark II will be there answer, you can see sample video here:

  • how do you like the d90? have you had any problems with it so far like overheating? ive read somewhere that if you record "too much" in one setting it shutdowns on it's own. ever happen to you?
  • youdiejoe plus 1 year ago
I haven't had the camera shut down on me, only time it has shut down is after it's been in live view for an extended period. But it's a matter of turning the power off and on again to get it to come back.
  • ah i see. thanks for the information!

Thanks for the video. Union Station brings back a lot of memories when i used to commute between the OC and Los Angeles. This video really captures the mood and feel i had for it.

I just read in the wiki that Nikon D90, Canon 5DmkII and even the RED cameras all use rolling shutter which results in je skewed jelly image.
So you don't have to worry about other pro cameras not having the jelly effect when you're buying a D90.

Let's just use it anyway... you can make great pictures with this.
    Great clip man.

What kind of tripod did you use btw?
  • youdiejoe plus 11 months ago
A inexpensive mini tripod. VELBRON, I think is the brand.
