Tibet clips shot on a Nikon D90 for a short on the Guardian website. Edited in Final Cut Pro and graded using magic bullet looks. Not perfect but I hope you can see what is possible with a DSLR in the future, it is certainly good enough for the newspaper's website right now.

You can see the finished report here guardian.co.uk/world/video/2008/oct/01/tibet

All footage apart from the interviews and archive stuff was shot on the D90. Interviews were done on a Sony EX-1.

Fantastic work Dan. Great angles. I am really in a dilema about getting this camera for shooting video. I see some great work and I also see crap.
    What is your advice.

    Cheers
  • Hey Taylor, just saw your comment and thought I'd mention that I shot a 3-part documentary series with the D90 and the footage looks fantastic (in my humble opinion, as the film's DP...). Not to toot my own horn, I'm just really happy with what that camera was able to give me, in such a small, inconspicuous package. The trailer for the doc series will be on vimeo soon. Send me a message if you'd like me to alert you when it is on line. Good luck.

    Which do you like better?

    The D40 or HV20?

Hey Dan, great, great little doc. I saw the entire thing on the website. What lens(es) did you use here?
  •
  • Dan Chung plus 3 years ago
The D90 is just a tool, I think it can produce sometimes stunning results and on other occasions it can be pretty average. I think a HV20 is a great tool too, I use both. I will try an EOS5DmkII as well, you just don't know what works for you until you try it.

    Lens wise there is a Nikon 80-200 f2.8, 17-35 f2.8, Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and a Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 in use here.

I love the shot with the flailing awnings!

  • It's really unbelievable to see how good the results are - with a DSLR!

    Great!

    Dan,
Great stuff, man. Are you using an external recorder or the internal mic for the audio? Thanks.
    Cheers,
    Bill.

I have an Edirol R09 recorder which I use some of the time for sync sound.

Very nice, Dan. You got some great sound here, would have been nice to hear more nat sound piped through in the finished Guardian piece. Have you used the EOS 5D Mark II yet? I'm hoping to get my hands on one of those soon.

    CHINA OUT OF TIBET NOW.

    TIBET WILL BE FREE!
  • Rainer Mann 3 years ago
Yes , the Tibet clip is free: free of artifacts and rolling shutter. On the other side, camera doesn't move a lot...
(Sir, this is NOT a political forum, with all due respect!!)

So I guess the lens used in the praying shot at 00:20 was the Tokina 11-16 f2.8??

I'm in the process of getting a new lens, just want one (student budget). And I like wide, but some zooms can come in handy too. Can't decide.

I think you've shown what possibilities these cameras bring to journalism as a whole. Great example of that, and great clip.

nice footage. like the shots with the camera on the ground and the people slide forward to the point of focus. some of the footage almost looks cgi. did you play with it in post?

This is the most amazing footage I've seen with the D90. I got mine before my vacation to Korea and I dig it a lot. Your stuff is admittingly better than anything I can currently do and it goes to show that it's not all in the equipment - you have to have a good eye for composition and a plan on "how to tell the story". This Magic Bullet Looks plugin is also pretty dazzling. It makes even "B roll" shots look significant. Cheers and thanks for sharing.

Excellent use of the D90. It works in spades outdoors with good lenses. Love the ultra wide shoots.
