Starting from a trail lined with ferns and hau trees I crossed a stream before hiking up the west middle ridge of Wailupe Valley. I saw many native plants on the way to the cloud covered summit such as 'ilima, koa, 'ohi'a, alahe'e, 'uluhe, haha, hulumoa, hapu'u, and akoko. One of the surprises was a non-native hummingbird moth an inch long that looks and behaves like a hummingbird but is actually a moth.
