Two former Conrail units lead this northbound freight at Ashland, Virginia on September 20, 2008 - SD40-2R 8885 in full CSX livery, and C40-8W 7334 wearing a number patch on its otherwise original paint.
The 8885 has had a long railroad career. It started life in 1967 as Baltimore & Ohio SD40 7487 and later moved to the Central Railroad of New Jersey as its 3066. The financially ailing CNJ was rolled into Conrail in 1976, and the 3066 became CR 6290. In 1993, Conrail instituted a rebuild program for a small group of SD40s, and the 6290 became the 6999, adding the '-2R' to denote its status as rebuilt to EMD 'Dash 2' electrical specifications. When Conrail was split between Norfolk Southern and CSX in 1999, CR 6999 finally became CSX 8885. Now over 40 years old, it is still dependable enough to lead this mainline freight.
