This is one of my three favourite Chardonnays in our portfolio and one of the best ‘New World’ Chardonnays I have ever had. I’ve always loved the winery and this wine in particular, but in 2006 we have seen another step up in quality. Why? The transition is now complete to Burgundian Chardonnay clones that offer a greater degree of finesse and complexity for winemakers using cool climate fruit. That is an important point here. We are not looking at big tropical fruit with lots of oak. This is an elegant, minerally food wine that develops beautifully in both the glass and bottle with a little time.
The name comes from owners Martin, Michael and Matthew. Interestingly, Michael Hill Smith just received the Order of Australia for his services to Australian wine. This should give you an impression of how serious these guys are.
