September 18, 2008, Battle Mountain,Nevada, USA. Sam Whittingham breaks his previous record of 81 mph and wins the final running of the .deciMach Human Powered Speed Prize. After a five mile run up, with no drafting or mechanical assistance , Sam pedaled through the 200 meter traps at an average speed of 82.33 miles per hour!!

1 year ago Actually, no. We are recording wind speed during these runs, and there was no measureable difference in wind speed as Sam cam through. The whole point in being able to pedal this fast is the extreme control of aerodynamic factors. If there was any perceptable breeze caused by his passage, he wouldn't be going nearly as fast. Paul's little stumble was caused by trying to turn fast enough to keep the bike in camera frame as it came past at 82 mph!! -
