North Park Lost Boys Take First Fall Ultimate Tournament
This last weekend, thirty three guys piled into seven cars to make the trek to Bloomington, IN; home of the Indiana University and hosts of the Adam Wiseman Memorial Tournament. Twelve college open teams attended, including big schools Purdue and Indiana. Taking twenty three first year players, we split ourselves into three tiny squads in order to learn as much as possible and be humbled in the process. Waking up before seven we were the first to fields and it set the tone early. We decided that morning we would call each of our teams "Tax Department", "Accounts Receivable", and "Payroll".
All three teams came out hungry, but only Tax Department, with core group leaders Sean Burke and Andrew Kunieda were able to muster a win. The rest of Saturday continued Tax Departments dominance with a 4-0 finish, Payroll bounced back going 3-1, while Accounts Receivable struggled and went 0-4 for the day. Then some china buffet preceded an early bed time.
Sunday morning left Accounts Receivable in the bottom bracket playing for 9th place. Though they couldn't manage a first round win over Indiana Y, they didn't go home empty handed. Captains Stefan Fritz and Jake Anderson helped bring a victory over Depauw College. While that was taking place, Payroll handed Purdue Y a quarterfinal loss 15-9 and Tax Department battled through a tough game against Hanover 15-12. Both North Park teams would move on to the semi-finals.
Payroll found their semi-final match-up to be an easy one with Rose Hulman Y. Their small school of Engineers simply couldn't construct a win over our dominate combination of handlers; Rob Hirsch and Riley Clark. Deep cuts from Neal Johnson tore through Hulman's defense and we handed them a quick defeat 15-7. On the other field, Tax Department was struggling against a strong Purdue X team. With a steady wind, it was Purdue who got the first break and took half 8-6. Solid play from Cameron Hodgkinson and Jeffery Erickson helped secure the come back win 15-12.
For the first time since the program was created at North Park in the fall of 2002, our open teams took both first and second place at a tournament. And we did it with more than two thirds of each team comprised of first year players. The future looks bright for the Mens North Park Ultimate team. Final Standings:
North Park Pay Roll - 1st
North Park Tax Department - 2nd
North Park Accounts Receivable - 11th
