On Wednesday, August 11, ICW discussed how corporations and local chambers of commerce are promoting and creating STEM opportunities. Participants heard Angela Baber, senior policy analyst of the education division of the National Governors Association, discuss their work in supporting STEM centers to help state K-12 education systems ensure all students graduate from high school with essential competencies in science, technology, engineering, and math; and improve college readiness. Chris Kershner of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce talked about how the Dayton Chamber supported the establishment of the Dayton Regional STEM school, which offers students a project-based curriculum that integrates STEM content areas with social studies, language arts and the fine arts, and connects the curriculum to the work of scientists, innovators, and entrepreneurs throughout the Dayton region. Participants learned how these organizations are working to improve STEM education and how you can apply their experiences to your own community.
